Model-based Software Engineering (MBSE) is now accepted as a Software Engineering (SE) discipline and is being taught as part of more general SE curricula. However, an agreed core of concepts, mechanisms and practices — which constitutes the Body of Knowledge of a discipline — has not been captured anywhere, and is only partially covered by the SE Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK). With the goals of characterizing the contents of the MBSE discipline, promoting a consistent view of it worldwide, clarifying its scope with regard to other SE disciplines, and defining a foundation for a curriculum development on MBSE, this paper provides a proposal for an extension of the contents of SWEBOK with the set of fundamental concepts, terms and mechanisms that should constitute the MBSE Body of Knowledge.

Creation and management of metadata documents can be quite a difficult task to accomplish manually. To address this issue in the context of the EBUCore v1.3 metadata set, we propose a GUI-based metadata editor, QEbu, developed during the Multimedia Archival Techniques course, held at the Polytechnic University of Turin in collaboration with RAI. The aim is to provide a user-friendly graphical editor to create and manage XML documents, relieving the user from the burden of worrying about the structure of the data and letting him focus on the actual content. QEbu has been developed in C++ using the cross-platform and open source library Qt 4.8; this framework was chosen in order to exploit its natural features for developing interface-centered applications.

A solution to current descriptive metadata delivery problems is the use of metadata embedded in the audio-visual essence containers themselves. This way, metadata can no longer get lost and needs no separate out-of-band delivery mechanism. Using EBUCore metadata embedded in essence files using a freely available reference SDK can ease the adoption of embedded metadata significantly and can help archive systems in supporting such standards-compliant embedded descriptive metadata. In this paper we describe the proceedings and lessons learnt from a development project of EBU and Limecraft, in which we investigated the use of MXF-embedded EBUCore metadata as way to support feeding metadata-enriched MXF files to a variety of media production and archiving systems.

This thesis aims to give a theoretical as well as practical overview of an emerging issue in the field of IT security named Format Preserving Encryption (FPE). Although FPE is not new, it is relatively unknown. It is used in the full-disk encryption and some other areas. Nevertheless, it is to this day even unknown to many cryptographers. Another issue that is on everyone's lips is the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT offers a whole new scope for FPE and could give it possibly a further boost. Format Preserving Encryption is - as the name says - an encryption in which the format of the encrypted data is maintained. When a plaintext is encrypted with FPE, the ciphertext then has the same format again. As illustrated for example on the cover page: If we encrypt the owner and the number of a credit card with AES we get an unrecognizable string. If we use FPE instead, we might get for example Paul Miller and the number 4000 0838 7507 2846. The advantage is that for man and/or machine nothing changes. The encryption is therefore not noticed without analysis of the data. The advantage can also become a disadvantage. An attacker has with the format of the ciphertext already information about the plaintext. This thesis starts with an introduction to the Format Preserving Encryption. In doing so, different variants of FPE are shown. In a next step, a Java library is explained and documented, in which we have implemented some of these FPE variants. This library is designed to enable programmers to use FPE without the need for detailed knowledge about the functionality. Then we explain by means of a tutorial and step by step with a concrete and simple example, how a subsequent integration of FPE could look like. In a final part the integration into a more complex and already widely used application is shown, an Android app called OwnTracks. With this combination of theoretical and practical information a broad basic knowledge should be provided on the topic, which then can serve as a basis on how FPE can be used and whether a use is reasonable.

Running head: MODEL-BASED SYSTEMS ENGINEERING IMPLEMENTATION 1 Research Project: Model-Based Systems Engineering Implementation (Name and date withheld) MODEL-BASED SYSTEMS ENGINEERING IMPLEMENTATION 2 Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Implementation Section 1: Requirements Analysis Section 1 tasks for the MBSE project will identify issues and requirements for implementing an MBSE system for our Engineering and Systems Integration work. Problem Definition Our Engineering department focuses on a niche market of systems engineering, design, integration, and ongoing maintenance and support of emergency communication and power systems, predominantly housed in High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) protected mobile environments. The complexity of the integrated voice, data, network, and audio/video systems we work with, the specialized nature of the work, and the demanding project timelines have put a strain on our resources and existing processes. We need to leverage common requirements and design elements across projects and customers while remaining adaptive to unique and changing customer needs. With people spread across multiple projects, it is harder to capture changes on one system that should be implemented on others – especially since requirements and design files are all in separate Word, Excel, Visio and other documents. We would also like to expand our business to new customers with complex Systems-of-Systems (SoS) environments that may require protections from HEMP events. To do that, we need to streamline our processes and reduce redundant work to allow people to reasonably take on additional projects and make new hires productive on project work more quickly – while maintaining critical quality factors. Issues requiring solution. The following list describes the primary issues requiring the development of an MBSE system for Engineering. 1. Business growth is placing a strain on senior employees with specialized skills and knowledge. MODEL-BASED SYSTEMS ENGINEERING IMPLEMENTATION 3 2. System information is contained in a large, diverse set of files (Excel files, Word documents, Visio diagrams, and CAD files) with no easy way to share technical information. 3. We can’t easily reuse or modify applicable requirements and design elements between projects. This increases cost and effort of new work. 4. It 's hard to perform change management and assess impacts on a short timeline across the systems’ lifecycle, again increasing workloads and quality risks. 5. We’re not able to quickly evaluate new customer requirements and designs against existing systems efficiently, increasing the effort and response time on customer proposals. 6. There is an increasing demand from customers to see architectural views and interconnecting systems that help them understand the proposed designs. 7. Consistently high workloads cause bottlenecks that slow ...
