1. Jesus Teaches on the O.T. law
Sermon on the Mt (Mat. 5:17-20)
Matt 5:17-20
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not
come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verilyI say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle
shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and
shall teach men so, he shall be calledthe least in the kingdom of heaven:
but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be calledgreat in
the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceedthe
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into
the kingdom of heaven.
613 Old Testament laws
Isa 42:21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness'sake; he will
magnify the law, and make it honourable.
Ps 40:6-8 6 Sacrifice andofferingthou didst not desire; mine ears
hast thou opened: burnt offeringand sin offeringhast thou not
required. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is
written of me, 8 I delightto do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is
within my heart.
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilledin us,
who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Col 2:16-17 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink,
or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath
days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of
Christ.
2. John 5:46-47 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believedme:
for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye
believe my words?
Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake
unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which
were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms,
concerningme.
Matt 3:15 And Jesus answeringsaidunto him, Suffer it to be so now: for
thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he sufferedhim.
Matt 5
18 For verilyI say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle
shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
2Pet 3:12-13 12 Looking for and hastingunto the comingof the
day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and
the elements shall melt with ferventheat? 13 Nevertheless we,
accordingto his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth,
wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Rev 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it,
from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was
found no place for them.
Matt 5
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and
shall teach men so, he shall be calledthe least in the kingdom of heaven:
but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be calledgreat in
the kingdom of heaven.
Rom 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid:
yea, we establish the law.
Rom 7:12-14 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment
holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death
unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, workingdeath
3. in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandmentmight
become exceedingsinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual:
but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Gal 3:22-26 22 But the scripture hath concludedall under sin, that
the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that
believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut
up unto the faith which shouldafterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore
the law was our schoolmaster to bringus unto Christ, that we might
be justifiedby faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer
under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in
Christ Jesus.
Rom 6:14-16 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are
not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin,
because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his
servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of
obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 7:3-6 3 So then if, while her husbandliveth, she be marriedto
another man, she shall be calledan adulteress: but if her husband be
dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though
she be marriedto another man. 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also
are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye shouldbe
marriedto another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we
should bringforth fruitunto God. 5 For when we were in the flesh,
the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members
to bring forth fruit unto death. 6 But now we are deliveredfrom the
law, that beingdead wherein we were held; that we should serve in
newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
The commandments are the Old Testament ten commandments because
following verses are an exhortation of the law.
Matt 5:21 … Thou shalt not kill; …
4. Matt 5:27 … Thou shalt not commit adultery:
Matt 5:33 … Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto
the Lord thine oaths:
Matt 5:38 … An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Matt 5:43 …Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Matt 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in
heaven is perfect.
These commandments are still in effect and will judgethe unsaved John5:45-47;
12:48.
John 5:45-47 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father:
there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believedme: for he
wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath
one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall
judge him in the last day.
The law is applicable to not only Jew but Gentile also Rom2:15-17.
Rom 2:15-17 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their
hearts, their conscience also bearingwitness, and their thoughts the
mean while accusingor else excusingone another;) 16 In the day
when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christaccordingto
my gospel. 17 Behold, thou art calleda Jew, and restest in the law,
and makest thy boast of God,
Notice a change in the list of commandments for the Church age Rom13:8-10,
Col2:14-16. Fromten to six.
5. Rom 13:9-10 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt
not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou
shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly
comprehendedin this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour
as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is
the fulfillingof the law.
Col 2:14-16 14 Blotting out the handwritingof ordinances that was
againstus, which was contraryto us, and took it out of the way,
nailingit to his cross; 15 And having spoiledprincipalities and
powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphingover them in it.
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect
of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
The first day Sunday is observed often Act20:7, 1Cor16:1-2.
Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples
came together to break bread, Paul preachedunto them, ready to
depart on the morrow; and continuedhis speech until midnight.
1Cor 16:1-2 1 Now concerningthe collection for the saints, as I have
given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first
day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath
prosperedhim, that there be no gatherings when I come.
The Sabbath is unusualin that it is a ceremonial observance, not a moral
command Mark2:26-27; 3:1-5, John9:16, Ezek20:20, Nehemiah9:14. TheSabbath
was a sign given to Israeland unknown till Exodus 12:6; Adam, Abel, Enoch, Noah,
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph didn’t observethe “Sabbath”.
Jesus and Paul omit the Sabbath when talking of righteousness Luke18:20,
Rom13:8-10.
Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit
adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour
thy father and thy mother.
6. Rom 13:9-10 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other
commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour
as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
The commandment to observeand teach the Ten Commandments have a primary
doctrinal application to the Second AdventIsa66:22, 24, Mat24:20, Rev12:17;
14:12.
Isa 66:22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will
make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and
your name remain.
Isa 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the
men that have transgressedagainst me: for their worm shall not die,
neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring
unto all flesh.
Matt 24:20 But pray ye that your flightbe not in the winter, neither
on the sabbath day:
Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to
make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the
commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep
the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Jesus gives two new commandments 1John3:23, John14:21; 15:10-12; 14:23.
1John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe
on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he
gave us commandment.
John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he
it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my
Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
7. John 15:10-12 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in
my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide
in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy
might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12 This is my
commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
John 14:23 Jesus answeredandsaid unto him, If a man love me, he
will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come
unto him, and make our abode with him.
The motivation to obey the law changes fromfear, to appreciation, to a natural
response; fromO.T, to Church age, to Mil.
Church age mandate:
Acts 15:19-20 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them,
which from among the Gentiles are turnedto God: 20 But that we write
unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication,
and from things strangled, and from blood.
The Church age is picture to the Jew of what the Mil. will be like. A Christian is
the example to make Israeljealous of whathe could havehad and now will have
to “endure” to receive.
Ezek 36:26-27 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit
will I put within you: and I will take awaythe stony heart out of your
flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit
within you, and cause you to walkin my statutes, and ye shall keep
my judgments, and do them.
Deut 30:4-6 4 If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts
of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from
thence will he fetch thee: 5 And the LORD thy God will bring thee
8. into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it;
and he will do thee good, and multiplythee above thy fathers. 6 And
the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heartof thy
seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy
soul, that thou mayest live.
Jer 32:39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may
fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after
them:
Jer 31:33-34 33 But this shall be the covenantthat I will make with
the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law
in their inwardparts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God,
and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every
man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the
LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the
greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I
will remember their sin no more.
Heb 8:10 For this is the covenantthat I will make with the house of
Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their
mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and
they shall be to me a people:
