Selex ES, a Finmeccanica company, is proud to announce that its new emergency communication system was used by the Protezione Civile and blue light services in Rome throughout last week as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flocked to Rome for the Conclave and following inauguration of Pope Francis I. Selex ES guaranteed Rome’s emergency communications during Francis I Papal
inauguration week
Selex ES, a Finmeccanica company, is proud to announce that its new emergency communication system
was used by the Protezione Civile and blue light services in Rome throughout last week as hundreds of
thousands of pilgrims flocked to Rome for the Conclave and following inauguration of Pope Francis I. The
communication system, which was delivered within an extremely tight timeframe, will continue to be used
throughout the Easter season as large numbers of tourists and pilgrims continue to arrive in Rome,
challenging the city’s infrastructure for the management of crises and emergencies.
The new system was ordered at the end of 2012 by LAit (Lazio Innovazione Tecnologica), a company owned
by the Lazio regional government, and delivered by a group of companies led by Selex ES. The aim of the
project was to enhance and broaden the radio networks between the Proteizione Civile and bluelight
services’ operation centres and their field personnel responding to large events or emergencies within the
Lazio region. In addition to more secure and reliable communications, in the future the system will deliver
additional services such as data transmission.
Meeting European digital mobile radio standards, the new system has been adopted by several regions in
Italy over recent years and has been proven reliable on operations with the Protezione Civile and blue light
services, both day-to-day and during extraordinary and critical events.
The new communication system was delivered quickly and, during this challenging first week of operations in
Rome, performed admirably. The success of this project shows that Selex ES’s communications solutions
are mature and reliable enough to be used at large events and in critical emergency situations around the
world.
