6. Concept Note :
The idea behind Jal Chakra is to ease the process of transportation of water required by the rural Indians
for their daily chores. Most of these people do not have direct access to potable water in their houses.
They have to go many kilometers to fetch water.
Jal Chakra is inspired from the act of children playing with tyres in rural India. The product tries to
convert the mundane and painstaking activity of transporting water into a child’s play, thus elevating
the responsibility of bringing water from women to children and men of the house also.
The product can transport average requirement of water (about 50-60 liters) from the source of water
to the village homes. It is made of a durable LLDP plastic hollow cylinder with an outer layer of tyre. This
tyre can be manufactured using the waste reclaimed tyres giving them a second life as well as making
the product tuff and suitable for Indian terrain.
The product is made out of minimum parts possible. There are no handles attached to it. I try to capture
the essence of Indian mentality of ‘jugaad’ for designing its handle. The user is free to use any kind of
rope such as jute, leather, hemp, nylon etc. for rolling the container.
In its one quarter, Jal Chakra is fixed with 2 low cost filters from inside. These filters purify and store up
to 15 liters of water every day. So, a person first gets his/her daily requirement of water in the Jal chakra
and then once back home use the same container for consumption of drinking water.
One may question the cost effectiveness of Jal Chakra since the villagers may not be able to afford it, but
I believe that with the help of Government funding this project could be quite successful and will
essentially help in uplifting the lives of rural India, especially the female population.
