2. Introduction
Unlike cigarettes, which have become mainstream and which
have been tried at least once in their life by almost anyone,
cigars still remain a mystery for many. They’re associated with
rich people and entertain a whole lot of myths that have no solid
basis in reality.
In this presentation, we propose to dispel some of those myths
and set the record straight once and for all.
3. Myth 01
Cigars Are only for the Rich
Just enter any tobacco shop and you will quickly realize how false that idea
really is. If a lot of people still believe that cigars are a sign of wealth, it’s
because of movies and the press which continue to reinforce that myth by
associating the two.
Just like villains, who are always dressed in
black, wealthy industrialists are always
depicted with a cigar in their hand. The
truth is that you can get a fine cigar for less
than $5.
4. Myth 02
You Can Tell a Cigar’s Strength by its Maduro (Wrapper)
Two other myths that plague the world of cigar smoking have to
do with the wrapper. It is believed that not only does it bring the
flavor but that it also impacts the strength of the cigar in that a
dark wrapper will mean smoke that pack a punch. It just isn’t
so.
In fact, the filler leaves as well as the size of the cigar are as
important as the wrapper. It’s the whole blend that will
determine the characteristics of the cigar.
5. Myth 03
The Color of the Ash Can Tell the Quality of the Cigar
Even amongst connoisseurs, you will meet so-called experts who would have
you believe that if an ash is white it means that the cigar is of high quality.
That’s just nonsense.
All a white ash says about a cigar is that its
tobacco comes from a soil that was rich in calcium
and phosphorus. That’s it. The color of the
smoke depends on the minerals you can find in
the ground where the tobacco grew. Nothing more.
6. Myth 04
Cubans Are Rolled on the Thighs of Virgins
This has to be the most colorful myth on this list. However, if
one has any idea of what it takes to successfully roll a cigar,
the image of young women creating cigars on their lap will
make him smile.
It’s just impossible to do (i.e. rolling without the help of a
table) as the leaves need to be packed really tight. In fact,
cigar rolling used to be a man’s job until recently…
7. Myth 05
The Best Place to Keep Your
Cigars Is in the Refrigerator
Of all the myths that people perpetuate,
this has to be both the funniest and most
harmful for your precious collection as
storing your cigars in a fridge to keep
them "fresh" may actually damage
their wrapper. A refrigerator will chase
the moisture OUT of the cigar instead of
keeping it in.
The only suitable place where to store
cigars is in a humidor.
8. Conclusion
A shroud of mystery surrounds cigar smoking and people
engaged in that passion. As with every myth and legend, though,
one only has to educate himself to learn that most of what he
thought or had heard about that hobby was wrong.
We hope that, with this presentation, we have helped lift the veil
on cigars and made you see that it’s a pleasurable experience
opened to virtually anyone.
