Post 3 music video analysis 2
1. Music Video Analysis
Video 1: The 1975 - Girls
The 1975 are an English indie rock band formed based in Manchester. The group
consists of Matt Healy (vocals, guitar), Adam Hann (guitar), George Daniel (drums,
backing vocals) and Ross MacDonald (bass). Having previously performed and
released material under various guises including Talkhouse, The Slowdown,[24]
Bigsleep,[25] and Drive Like I Do, the band eventually settled on the name The 1975.
2. Mise-en Scene – At the start we have the use of the artist symbol (the The 1975 - Girls
rectangle around the drummer). At the start the band are discussing the conventions of there video,
saying that they are not a pop band wanting the video to reflect
them more as a band rather than looking like a typical pop band.
Everything about this video is unconventional to what The 1975
are about and how there videos are. The song GIRLS, is talking
about girls being to young for them (They're just girls breaking
hearts, Eyes bright, uptight, just girls, But she can't be what you
need if she's 17). The video not only shows man as what women
want to see them like but also what men want to see of women,
suppressing both the male and the female gaze.
Camera Work – At the very start of the video and throughout we have conventional shots of the band
stood like above and to the right. This is a long shot and the shot from the start is an establishing shot
showing the band, the main part of the video. This is a typical
convention for a band to stand in a music video, lead singer at
the front, then guitarists the drummer at the back. Throughout
the video we have fast and slow cuts that take us, especially from
the start, to and from the lead singer in the yellow room/
backdrop. There is a little narrative in the video but not as much
as there conventionally is in other videos. I feel as though the fast
jump cuts between The 1975 and the ‘girl band’ works really well
as it shows us the match on action that they are
trying to create. The camera has not been moved
and has been left on a tripod so that the girls are in
exactly the same place as the boys are in the video.
This is something that I feel works really well and
could be used in our video.
3. Editing – As mentioned in the camera work The 1975 - Girls
section the video has a lot of
fast jump cuts to an from each are of the video.
Andrew Goodwin identifies key elements of
music videos one of these are the demands of
the record label will include the need for lots of
close ups of the artist and the artist may
develop motifs which recur across their work. I
feel as though this video has matched these
conventions. Throughout the video we have
various jump cuts that are exactly the same, the
jump cuts between the guys and the girls and
jump cuts to and from the actual word ‘GIRLS’.
This is something that is shown so many times
throughout the video and will be the same shot
just over and over again. There is no actual
zooming or in or out shots in the video every
shot that needs to be changes scene and it is all
done through a jump cut to each scene or
different shot. For example the yellow
background shot to and from this to the
multiple shots of the band. The editing is very
pop band like, not what the band are normally
like but something that they are trying to
portray in this specific video, like we see when
the girls are lying on the sunbeds, something
here that will please the male gaze.
Sound – At the start we
have sections of the guitars
that match up to the music
identically. Changing guitar
throughout. We also have
the shot of the yellow screen
witch is the main shot in
witch we seethe lyrics being
spoken. We also see this
happening in the car scene
and the shots in the night
club and the studio where
the band are actually playing,
where it has been set up. The
girls are also singing along to
the lyrics even though we
know that the are not
actually singing they are just
mimicking what the boys are
doing, almost taking the mick
a little. This is not something
that you would see every day
in music videos but miming
of the lyrics is an Andrew
Goodwin conventions that is
in most if not every video.
