This presentation was given at the Oosting Memorial Symposium on April 17, 2009. The authors were Yi-Hsin Erica Tsai and Paul S. Manos. Abstract: Because species respond individually to climate change, understanding community assembly requires examination of multiple species from a diversity of forest niches. We present the phylogeographic history of an understory, parasitic herb (Epifagus virginiana, beechdrop) that has an obligate and host specific relationship with a common eastern North American forest tree (Fagus grandifolia, American beech). The migration histories of the host and parasite were compared to elucidate potential limits on the parasite’s range and to understand their responses to shared climate change. Two chloroplast DNA regions were sequenced and landscape genetic and coalescent methods were used to reconstruct the post-glacial migration history of the parasite. Epifagus virginiana is shown to have migrated from the southern Appalachians into the Northeast and then westward into the Midwest. The parasite's pattern of expansion parallels the development of beech forests but differs from the routes of initial range expansion of beech. This suggests that host density effects drive the distributional changes in the parasite, which are further confirmed in fine scale studies. The composite migration history of this parasite and its host shows how two diverse components of a forest community colonized the landscape separately -- even as aspects of the host's distribution greatly influenced the path of the parasite -- before reassembling into their present day co-distributed range. On Friday, December 13, 2019, ICLR conducted a webinar titled 'Near-Earth Asteroid Impact: A Rare but Interesting Hazard', led by Clark R. Chapman, Senior Scientist (Retired), Dept. of Space Science Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colorado. Death or property damage by an asteroid strike is an extremely unlikely hazard. Indeed another major mass-extinction, like what happened 66 million years ago when dinosaurs and many other species were extinguished, or even a civilization-threatening impact by an asteroid 1 or 2 km in diameter, is extraordinarily unlikely. But the ancient craters in Canada and other geologically stable subcontinents on Earth reflect the fact that occasional bombardment of our planet continues. There has been much success in the last two decades in detecting asteroids that could cause such totally devastating impacts. Of the more than 95% of them detected, none will strike Earth within the next century. But there has also been increasing realization that much more common impacts by much smaller asteroids are a significant hazard, even if much less frequent or dangerous than the usual natural or human-caused disasters. For instance, 1500 people were sent to hospital in western Siberia in 2013 when a 20-meter asteroid exploded with the force of a half-megaton bomb over the city of Chelyabinsk. The current low level of risk could be further and sharply reduced during the next decade if current telescope facilities are completed and become operational. If a small, oncoming asteroid can be detected before it strikes, it is technically possible to deflect it or at least provide warning in time to evacuate ground-zero.

Extinction marks the evolutionary death of a species. Observing the fates of many species ancient and recent, it appears to be Nature’s mechanism of periodically clearing out the outdated to make room for the fit. But is extinction necessarily inevitable for every species? More specifically, are humans destined to meet an unavoidable end? A pandemic will kill off all humans. In the past, humans have indeed fallen victim to viruses. Perhaps the best-known case was the bubonic plague that killed up to one third of the European population in the mid-14th century . While vaccines have been developed for the plague and some other infectious diseases, new viral strains are constantly emerging — a process that maintains the possibility of a pandemic-facilitated human extinction.

(This paper is based on a joint presentation given at Icarus Interstellar’s Starship Congress, August 15-18, 2013. This work forms the basis for Project Astrolabe, at Icarus Interstellar.) http://www.icarusinterstellar.org/introducing-project-astrolabe-navigating-the-future-of-civilization/ Though the concept of Existential Risk or Xrisk denotes risks to our very existence, it will be shown that Xrisk is far from intractable or imponderable. Because of the subtypes described in our session below (Permanent Stagnation and Flawed Realization), humanity can do much to improve the prospects for Earth-originating intelligent life tomorrow by working to improve its prospects today. This begins with directly mitigating the extinction risks that can be mitigated, and with safeguarding—to the best of humanity’s abilities—the scientific, cultural, and biological record so that future recoveries are possible if needed. The Vessel proposal attempts a unified approach to this work. If existential risk is well mitigated, the prospects for Earth- originating life over the very long term are shown to be expansive. (Xrisk 101) is divided into two parts, and mirrors the format of the original presentation. The first part, authored by Heath Rezabek, will cover the fundamentals of Xrisk, and update on the Vessel project, a framework for preserving the cultural, scientific, and biological record in resilient facilities, on Earth and beyond. The second part, authored by Nick Nielsen, will explore the longer term implications of overcoming Xrisk for the future of civilization.

The question: What is the probability that non-anthropogenic causes (e.g., asteroid, comet impacts, solar flares, a supervolcanic eruption or a stellar explosion) will be the cause of death, within a 5-year period, for more than 10% of humans alive at the beginning of that period by 2050? The answer: While it is difficult to predict with certainty the likelihood of non-anthropogenic causes of death for humans within a 5-year period, it is clear that the probability is relatively low. According to NASA, there are approximately 25,000 near-Earth objects (NEOs) that could pose a potential threat to Earth. While the likelihood of a major impact within a 5-year period is low, it is not impossible. For example, the Chelyabinsk meteor exploded over Russia in 2013. The impact was not fatal, indicating that while such events can be catastrophic, they may not necessarily result in widespread death. My estimation of the probability of this occurring is very low estimated to be approximately 0.001%. The most latest data says that the next asteroid to hit Earth is estimated to be in 2880 which is centuries away (Mack, 2022). While solar flares do not typically cause fatalities, they can indirectly lead to deaths by disrupting essential services and infrastructure. They occur in July 2025 at maximum solar maximum (Cappucci & Kunches, 2023). I think the damage to infrastructure and very high radiation exposure can cause exacerbate existing diseases (MacMillan, 2022). There is no cause-and-effect correlation between solar flares on your health directly. The estimation of the probability of widespread death is 12% (Near miss: The solar superstorm of July 2012). Supervolcanoes are rare but powerful volcanic eruptions that can cause widespread destruction and death. While the chances of such an event occurring are low, the consequences could be catastrophic. Existing data suggest that supervolcanic eruption will occur every 17,000 years on average and the last known event was 26,500 years ago which makes it very difficult to anticipate when the next supervolcanic eruption will take place (Supervolcanic eruption 2022). The probability of a supervolcanic eruption at Yellowstone National Park within the next few hundred years is approximately 0.00014% and I think the estimation for a supervolcanic eruption by other volcanoes is relatively the same (Questions about supervolcanoes). Stellar explosions can release vast amounts of energy and radiation that could have devastating consequences for life on Earth. The next supernova (supernova requiem) will appear around 2037 (Jenner, 2021). However, the next supernova that would detrimentally affect life on Earth is 50 light years away (What's a safe distance from a Supernova? 2022). The likelihood of a nearby star exploding is approximately 0.00003%. There is increased use of nuclear energy after the Second World War which results in increase in artificial radioactivity on our planet. The objective of this article is to show the estimated amount of artificial radioactivity on earth surface and its effect by comparing it with the radioactive decay which took place in Hiroshima bombing by ‘little boy’. There is estimated amount of 100 trillion curie of radioactivity on earth surface for human use. This man made radioactivity on earth surface has capacity to change temperature of the earth by 0.97oC if heat is evenly distributed and unfortunately Hiroshima bombing did not stop but continued at rate of 39 ‘little boy’ bombing of the earth per second. Every second 39 atomic bombs of ‘little boy’ size are dropped. The ecosystem is the quintessential essence of life on our planet, and this crucial life system is showing signs of breaking down. It is likely a more pressing problem than climate change. Time will tell but time is short. The ecosystem consists of all living organisms that interact with nonliving components like air, water, and soil contained within the biosphere, which extends from the bottom of the oceans to the top of the mountains. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media.
