Proper hand washing is essential to keeping infants healthy as their immune system is low. “Hand washing is the most
important health practice that parents /educators and children must implement to reduce the spread of infections.”
(Pimento, Page 129) This was seen when my baby had many colds and ear infections within the first year. Although it is
common for infants to catch colds and infections, I need to use proper hand washing.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
SIDS is more likely when a baby sleeps onits stomach than when it sleeps on ot’s back. SIDS is more likely during the
winter, when babies sometimes become overheated from too many blankets and too heavy sleepwear. (Children: A
Chronological Approach page) I have to remember to keep my baby’s crib free from toys and too many blankets. I also
have to remember to put my baby on his back when he sleeps.
Drowning
Young Children can drown in as little as 5cm of water which means children must be supervised around water and help
them develop a respect for it. (Healthy Foundations in Early Childhood Settings page 369) I have to be sure that I have
all of my supplies when I am giving my baby a bath. I know that I cannot leave the baby attended.

2. The Toddler Years (2 Years Old)

When Xavier turned two, I found out I was pregnant with our second child. I am concerned that Xavier won’t get a
sufficient amount of attention from my partner and myself. Xavier is starting to become very clingy and I am concerned
that he won’t be able to do everyday things on his own. It is important that Xavier gains a sense of responsibility and
independence before the new baby comes.
