2. Linseed
What is the difference between
flaxseed and linseed?
Nutritionally they are the same, the
only difference can be seen in the plant
itself. ... Linseed is a shorter plant, with
lots of branches and lots of
seeds. Flaxseed is taller (3 foot) with
fewer branches. Therefore, linseed is
good for creating oil and flax has longed
been used to make linen, rope, and nets

4. Linseed
Linseed oil, also known as flaxseed oil
or flax oil (in its edible form), is a
colourless to yellowish oil obtained
from the dried, ripened seeds of the
flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). The
oil is obtained by pressing, sometimes
followed by solvent
extraction. Linseed oil is a drying oil,
meaning it can polymerize into a solid
form.
5. Linseed
• Linseed is used by the food industry
as linseed oil.
• It is used in the drugs industry as a
supplement.
• Another user is the linen industry.
• It is also used in the furniture
industry as a wood finishing product
and in the paper industry.
• Linseed oil is used as a paint binder
in the paint industry
10. Linseed
• European imports of linseeds have been increasing since
2013, at an annual average rate of +5.4%. In 2017,
linseed imports to Europe amounted to 927 thousand tonnes
(€412 million). The last five years show an
annual value increase of only +0.1%, due to a strong price
decrease in recent years.
• There are no data available to distinguish between linseeds
that are imported for oil-crushing or for other
end uses, or between different qualities or varieties.
• Belgium is the largest importer of linseed in Europe (50%
share in volume in 2017), mainly due to its position
as a trade hub for this product, via the port of Antwerp, and its
crushing activities. Belgium has recorded an
annual average increase of +1.4% in volume since 2013.
• Germany is another large importer of linseeds in Europe,
with an 18% share in total imports. Since 2013,
Germany has registered an annual increase of +6.5% in
volume and +2.4% in value.
11. Canada, China, Russia, India, the UK,
and the US are the major linseed
producers, with Canada being the major
producer as well as trader of linseed. In
2016, the global production for linseed
was around 2.9 million metric ton.
12. An increasing market for Linseed is for specialist
animal feed, based on the naturally high Omega 3
content of Linseed. Premium Crops is the exclusive UK
supplier of Linseed to Valorex, a French animal feed
company. They buy over 55,000 tonnes of Linseed each
year for use in animal feeds.
