8. International Trade in Coconut Products
The coconut trade has been in the past dominated by copra and coconut oil. However,
demand for coconut oil has seen a sharp drop during the last decades due to increased
competition from other edible oils, such as palm oil and soybean oil. Demand for high-value
coconut products such as desiccated coconut, virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut
water, activated carbon and coir products in international markets has been growing at faster
rate and provides ample export opportunities. India’s coconut export basket comprises of an
array of products like activated carbon, coconut(fresh/dried), copra, coconut oil, desiccated
coconut, coconut shell charcoal, coir and coir products, etc

10. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra
Pradesh are the leading producers of
coconut in the country and contribute more
than 90 percent of total production. As per
the Second Advance Estimates of 2019-20
of Horticultural Crops, coconut production
in the country was 14.69 million tonnes, at
about the same level as it was last year.
Similarly, area under coconut cultivation
(2.15 million ha) and yield level (6.8 t/ha) in
2019-20 is estimated at the same level as in
2018-19.
