This document discusses radial artery occlusion (RAO) following cardiac catheterization. It summarizes data from studies showing a low rate of RAO ranging from 0-13% depending on the device used. Of over 25,000 procedures involving the radial artery over 8 years, only 1200 cases of RAO were observed, with no cases of hand ischemia. While RAO is common, clinical hand ischemia following RAO appears to be very rare. The low risk of hand ischemia does not outweigh the benefits of radial artery access for cardiac procedures.
