My film openings (babadook and cloverfield)
1. The Babadook (first two minutes)
I chose the Babadook as it is a Horror film, I want to mix found footage
with horror, and The Babadook is my horror film.
The starting of the Babadook firsts consists of a dream sequence the
character Amelia is dreaming. This represented through the dark colours and the
loud noises that the viewer is introduced into the film by. The filmstarts with
pitch black which then fades into women who is focused on breathing; this
instantly gives the viewer a feeling of suspense and tells that this is a filmwhich is
a part of the horror genre.
The lighting also is flashing lights, this gives off a dramatic effect as
the women is obviously under suspense and feeling tense in this bit of the film.
As this is opening the filmthis can give the viewer the first impression of the
character Amelia. She gives off a troubled expression in this opening, which
suggests that she is going to be the one under pressure in this horror film.
She is in a car which suggests something about the character. The use of dark
lighting in the background can also suggest that mystery to the film. The character is staring at the
camera also makes the viewer feel more intense in this scene. When glass hits her face this
suggests that the character is in some car accident. The sound effect that accompanies this glass
smashing is a sharp high pitched screech, suggesting pain to the women. The filmmixes the slow
motion effect with the use of dark lighting to create an eerie atmosphere during the crash with the
glass in the air.
The woman is now seen to wearing white clothing, suggests purity and light. This could
symbolise that the character is a good person at this point in moment in the film. The women is
shown to be struggling in this scene as she tries to stay upright, this can suggest her struggles that
she will go through in this film. When the car stops he is seen to look to her right and see a man
dressed in a grey jumper, converging with the dark lighting continues the eerie atmosphere of the
film.
The word “mum” is being said to her, faintly. This suggests that she is in a dream,
possibly a flashback of a traumatic event. As she is slowing being lifted onto the bed, the
background is shown to be black. As if she is going to back to a worse time then her traumatic
dream. This fades onto an empty bed. Suggesting that the person in the car has died (her husband)
and she is lonely without him. The first view of the child wearing a baby blue outfit, suggests his
innocence and he is telling his mother that he has “had the dream again”. This shows the child
wants comfort from his mother, this shows that the child is young and is looking for support from
his mother. Also because her son is waking her because of a ‘dream’ suggests that he had a
nightmare, which continues the horror/ eerie atmosphere of this film. The dark lighting juxtaposes
with his baby blue outfit to highlight with innocence.
2. Cloverfield (first three minutes)
When Cloverfield starts the audience is greeted by a bleeping sound and a screen
which is only used when video tapes do not work. This suggests a found footage
film. Then “U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE” appears on the top corner. This
suggests maybe a film with the military involved in this film. Then is cuts to a text
scene of the film stating that the footage is about the “MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS OF
CASE DESIGNATE “CLOVERFIELD””. Suggesting that the film is about something
that is called “Cloverfield” and when it says “MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS OF” suggests
that it is indeed a monster horror film. It then transitions onto a text slide stating
that the footage was found in an area formerly known as ‘CENTRAL PARK’
establishing that the filmis going to be set in New York. Also “AREA DORMERLY
KNOWN AS” suggests that a certain disaster has happened there, which continues
to suggest a monster film. The first shot of the film shows the dimly lit flat with a
view of New York City. This is establishing where the film is being set. Also the
genre of found footage is being shown off here. The first scene takes place at
6:42am showing the audience that the filmis being set in the morning in the first scene. The city is
foggy, giving off a horror genre view of the film. The film then cuts to an image with pictures and
other ornaments on a mantel piece. Then a cut is made to a messy bed, with a body in it. The dimly
lit room emphasises the horror in this film. The choice of bed sheets that is used emphasises the
dark nature of this film.
The themes I got from the beginning of Cloverfield are darkness, this is shown by the constant use of dim
lighting, suggesting that the film may a dark monster film (much like a horror). Other themes that I
got from the filmwould be the digital age. This suggests a few things; such as digital technology is
often used by millennials, this is instantly suggesting that the character holding the camera is a
millennial, this influences the audience to think of things that would be related to millennials and
what might go along with a video recording of millennials. Such would include partying, comedy,
drama and action.
Since the characters have not been introduced at this stage of the film, we (as the audience) would think
that the filmwould have a slow pace too it, however this may contrast with the fast paced action of the
monster attacking New York later on in the movie, highlighting the tragedy of “The Cloverfield Monster”. In
the first three minutes of this film we only get subtle hints of the plot, for instance; there is a relationship
between a man and a women involved in this film(suggesting romance), the dim/foggy New York City
suggesting that this is indeed the area of which “The Cloverfield Monster” chooses to invade) and the
character holding the camera (establishing the main character of this film).
There is no initial title sequence of this film, instead of a title sequence we are introduced to the film by a
film standby screen (however this suggests the film is found footage). The viewer’s response to this would
be that this is a filmthat involves the military, and gives off the impression that this is a serious film.
However this contrasts with the first scene as it is suggested that a millennial is controlling the camera,
because this gives off the effect that this film is not going to be ‘serious’. Initially creating suspense around
the monster that is featured in Cloverfield.
