She is the first person to swim across lake Ontario

On September 8 1954 ambitious Marilyn bell 16 the
underdog of the competition raced against who other
swimmers, Florence Chadwick and Winnie Roach
After 70000 strokes pulls out victories
A $10000 prize was offered for the other
athletes, Marilyn was not offered the prize but she
swam the distance anyway
4. Her Journey
Bell was not offered money however the Toronto star
offered to cover her journey and provided her a boat
and crew
Bell started her journey on September 8 1952 in
Youngstown, New York and finished her journey 21
hour later in Toronto
Her original journey was planned out to be 51.5km
Hourly updates of her journey was broadcasted on
the radio Olympic

When she won, she was offered the
money originally offered to the other
racers, $10000 along with over
$50000 in gifts from supporters
Her win amazed the
community, renewed interest in long
distance swimming and brought new
respect for the female population

Bell became the youngest person to swim
across the English channel on July 31 1955
On Aug 23 1956, she became the first
woman to conquer the difficult straits of
Juan de Fuca on her second attempt
