The world needs more accessibility (and I will explain why in my talk). Everyone can make the necessary changes to make the world more accessible. Even the new technical communicator can improve accessibility on the first day of their job through the choice of words. As you develop more skills in your field, you can do even more. You cannot do it all on your own, however. Everyone needs to get involved and not everyone wants to be told to „do accessibility”. Therefore, aside from showing you some practical solutions for including accessibility in your professional toolkit today, I want to inspire people to *desire* to „do accessibility” because it is the right thing to do, not because they have to do it. An everyday dilemma in technical communication: What do you call that “thing”? Whether you ask developers, marketing folks or users, you often get very different views. Along with user interfaces, documentation helps all stakeholders align their mental model of a product. Terminology plays a key role, and a controlled vocabulary is an ace up the technical writer’s sleeve. Controlled vocabularies are basically lists of concepts and the relationships between them. Beyond consistent naming, they are about structuring, categorizing and retrieving content. For example, you can use a vocabulary as a basis for documentation plans, tables of content, a help site’s navigation, search filters, or even to organize test cases. In this talk, I will share ways to create and maintain various types of vocabularies, and explain what each type is useful for. You can start with a flat list of terms and expand it into a glossary, a thesaurus, a taxonomy, or even a full-fledged ontology.

The importance and popularity of video is increasing all around us and has become a key element for the eLearning, documentation and training industry. It’s easier than ever to create a video, but how can we ensure that the videos we are creating are actually effective? What factors are important for the engagement of viewers and ultimately, for the success of our work? In a study conducted by TechSmith Corporation, 1900 participants were asked about their views on what constitutes a great video. Feedback from participants related specifically to three types of video: Instructional, informational and entertainment. Along with providing feedback to a series of questions, participants also submitted examples of what they thought were exceptional videos. These videos were reviewed and analyzed for shared characteristics. These findings provided insights into the behaviors and expectations of viewer and allowed us to compile a series of tips on how engagement in videos can be driven through tone, visuals, audio, story and more. „Wicked Problems” are problems that are difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize. In addition, complex interdependencies make it so that the effort to solve one aspect of a wicked problem may reveal or create other problems. Content managers must face these sorts of problems flexibly. Nemetics is a methodology developed by a process engineer in India based on NEME, a play on the term MEME, and an acronym for Notice, Engage, Mull, Exchange. It is also an attitude, a way of seeing, and a way of collaborating. It is not about tools and techniques, but flexible ways to move and develop our faculties of Seeing (Notice), Feeling (Engage), Thinking (Mull), Doing (Exchange), It is a kind of complexity science, based on studying interactions between: the events that take place around us, the behaviours of human beings and of systems that initiate any event, and the intentions and beliefs that lead to particular behaviours We’ll look at how to apply this specifically to wicked problems in the content industries, through two examples: applying Nemetics to User Assistance applying Nemetics to a complex technological relationship: interaction between Internet of Things, Human Bionics, and Augmented Reality

Everyone concentrates on (end) User Experience; it is important that information be presented in a way that makes sense to those consuming it, that it resonates with them.
