These slides present the story of 1 horse that was rescued from an illegal slaughter operation. He is one that has been saved but 200 in 2 years that have been stolen and brutally murdered for their meat in South Florida.
3. June 2008 The South Florida SPCA rescues animals from an illegal slaughter facility where the animals, including horses, are living in filth and misery and awaiting their cruel fate.
4. Many animals were rescued but this is the story of FREEDOM’S FLIGHT Just another brown horse?
5. The tattoo on Freedom’s lip, an indication that he was a racehorse that ran on a track at some point in his life, uncovered an unbelievable history.
6. Freedom was born in Kentucky in 2005 a descendant of such great racehorses as: Seattle Slew Secretariat Gallant Fox Omaha War Admiral Secretariat Seattle Slew
7. Freedom ran his last race at the age of 3 . He came in 3 rd place despite the fact that he broke his leg shortly after coming out of the gate.
8. This crippling injury ended his career and began a downward spiral of heartbreaking events.
9. Seeing little value in a disabled Thoroughbred, his owner apparently “ gave him away.”
10. Freedom was given to two subsequent “pony ride” companies where he never received treatment for his injury but continued to work until he could no longer walk.
12. When he was recued, veterinarians diagnosed Freedom with: Severe emaciation Strangles (infectious equine disease) Rain rot (fungus causing hair/skin loss) Bites and wounds Burns and rashes Hoof abscesses Detoxification from steroid abuse Broken cannon bone
14. Rescued by the South Florida SPCA and adopted by a Richard “Kudo” Couto . Freedom is slowly recovering physically and mentally.
15. Although he can never be ridden, he is a barn favorite and will live out his days with the dignity, care and love that all horses deserve regardless of the “value” that they may have.
16. We would like to thank Jeff Burnside of NBC for sharing Freedom’s story and the issue of illegal horse slaughter with the public.
17. It is only through awareness that we will end such abuses.
