Mysłowice – general informations
Mysłowice is a city in Silesia in Poland, bordering Katowice. The population of the city as of 2022 is
72,124.It is located in the center of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union in the Silesian Highlands, on
the Przemsza and Brynica rivers (tributaries of the Vistula). It is situated in the Silesian Voivodeship since
its formation in 1999, previously in the Katowice Voivodeship, and before then, the Autonomous Silesian
Voivodeship. Mysłowice is one of the cities comprising the 2.7 million conurbation – Katowice urban
area and within the greater Silesian metropolitan area with a population of about 5,294,000.

History of Mysłowice
Mysłowice is one of the oldest cities in Upper Silesia. Located at the confluence of theWhite and Black
Przemsza rivers, it is situated on an important trading route from Wrocław to Kraków.The earliest traces of
the modern settlement date back to the 11th and 12th century, when it was part of Piast-ruled Poland.The
first mention of a parish priest is found in a document from 1306. In 1360, Mysłowice was already referred to
as a town.The previously existing village was granted city rights around 1260.

Where did the name „Mysłowice” come
from?
The origin of the locality's name is not unequivocal, and several theories coexist on this matter.The place
name Mysłowice is derived from the Old Slavic name Mysław, Mysł, or Miłosław.The suffix "ice" or its Old
Polish older version ("icze") is characteristic of Slavic patronymic names originating from ancestral
settlements. It signifies the descendants of the founder or owner of the city, namely the "Mysłowicz" family.
The founder of the locality, the knight Mysław, was supposed to serve as a model for the depiction of the
male head in the Mysłowice coat of arms.

Coat of arms of Mysłowice
The coat of arms depicts, on a blue field, the head of a man with closed
eyes, black hair, and a full beard, with a natural-colored face. It most likely
represents the head of John the Baptist, the patron saint of the city (this
interpretation is given by the pre-war decision of the Minister of Internal
Affairs), or the head of Mysło/Mysław, the legendary founder of
Mysłowice. In some sources, the head is mistakenly considered to be that
of St. John.
The oldest surviving image of the Mysłowice coat of
arms appeared on the city seal from the early 17th
century, which was confirmed by documents from
1616

Location of Mysłowice
Mysłowice is located on the Silesian Upland, which is part of
the Silesian-Krakow Upland, along the Przemsza and Brynica
rivers.The city is situated within the Katowice Upland.
Mysłowice is centrally positioned in the Upper Silesian
Industrial District and is one of the central hubs in the Upper
Silesian conurbation.
The city is traversed by the Black Przemsza, which, near
Mysłowice, joins theWhite Przemsza to form the Przemsza
River. Additionally, the city is crossed by the Rawa, Brynica,
Bolina stream, Przyrwa (Ławecki Stream), and the Kosztowski
Ditch.
Mysłowice borders Katowice to the west, Sosnowiec to the
north, Jaworzno to the east, and Imielin and Lędziny to the
south.

Mysłowice – important places and
monuments
Parish of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Heart is a beautiful
church in the center of Mysłowice, prominently visible from
train windows. Constructed between 1888 and 1891 in the
shape of a Latin cross, made of red brick in the Neo-Gothic
style. It stands out with its towering spire.The interior features
lovely decorations and stained glass windows. Recently
refreshed on the outside.
Nearby, there are other interesting churches: the Evangelical-
Augsburg Church, the Church of St. Mary, and the small
Church of the Holy Cross.

Fifty meters from Freedom Square, a charming
little shrine catches the eye. Originally, it was a
small chapel funded in 1745 by the Jarlik family from
Niwka.The city's development necessitated the
construction of a new, larger bridge over the
Przemsza River and the demolition of the building
standing at its outlet.The chapel, dismantled in
1927, was reconstructed the following year in a form
that has endured to this day. At the end of the 20th
century, the chapel had to be dismantled once
again due to the construction of a new bridge. It
was reconstructed and consecrated once more in
the year 2000.Therefore, the chapel now stands in
its third location since its founding.

Słupna Park is a popular spot for walks and
various cultural events. During the season,
there is an active rope park, a children's pool,
and the water reservoir, due to water
cleanliness, is primarily used as a fish pond
(fishing is available for a fee), although it's
said that kayaks and pedal boats can be
rented.There is also a playground for
children, a soccer field, a beach volleyball
court, and restroom facilities.

Central Museum Of Firefighting is a small
museum located within a designated section of
the Central Firefighting Museum.The exhibition
features archaeological artifacts from
excavations within the city, archival photographs
of 20th-century Mysłowice, a reconstructed
interior of an Upper Silesian apartment from the
mid-20th century, and the history of Mysłowice's
industry.The museum is presented in an old-
fashioned style, and visitors can learn a lot from
the museum staff.The ticket price is very low.

Exploring Mysłowice wouldn't be complete without a
stroll around the train station and the city center. Near
the station, you can take a walk in Promenada Park,
established on the site of a former camp from the times
ofWorldWar II and the PRL era. Revitalized terrain
makes it an excellent place for leisurely walks,
reminiscent by name of the old Mysłowice promenade
along the Przemsza River, popular in the past. In the park,
you'll find pathways, a playground, two fountains, a
plaque commemorating the victims of the Nazi and later
Communist camp.

TheTown Hall in Mysłowice can be seen on Powstańców Street,
proudly serving as the seat of the Municipal Office of the City of
Mysłowice.The building appeared on the map in the years 1866-
1868 and was designed by Paul Jackisch. Constructed in the form
of a palace and adorned with neorenaissance decorations, this
marvelous structure has been attracting history enthusiasts for
years.
Admiring this building, it's worth directing your gaze towards the
massive tower and the beautiful stained glass installed above the
entrance doors. Convenient benches are placed around the
building where you can take a rest and relax, enjoying the
captivating architecture of the town hall.Visiting this site during a
trip to Mysłowice is truly worthwhile.

Old bourgeois tenement on Grunwaldzka Street fully
deserves the attention of visitors – it is very well-
preserved, boasts original architecture, and exudes a
distinctive eclectic style.
The bourgeois tenement was built in 1901 according
to the design by A. Krafczyk, who created it for the
merchant Józef Konge. If we feel inclined to take a
closer look at this building, let's make sure to step
inside and stroll through the staircase – there are
plenty of charming details to discover. It's also
worthwhile to pause for a moment by the ceramic
stove and admire the floor in the hallway.

Culture of Mysłowice
The city is sometimes referred to as the "Polish
Manchester" due to its industrial character and a
thriving rock music scene, similar to Manchester in
the late 80s and early 90s. Musical bands
originating from here include Myslovitz, Negatyw,
Penny Lane, LennyValentino, Delons, Iowa Super
Soccer, Korbowód, Milcz Serce, Mofoplan, Gutierez,
and ConBrio.

Artur Rojek – musician from Mysłowice
Artur Rojek is a Polish musician, vocalist,
lyricist, and composer who was born in
Mysłowice. He was a member of the bands
Myslovitz from 1992 to 2012 and Lenny
Valentino from 1998 to 2001.Additionally,
he is the initiator and artistic director of the
Off Festival. He is also a member of the
Academy of the Phonographic Industry of
theAssociation of Audio-Video Producers.

Jolanta Fraszyńska – actress from Mysłowice
Jolanta Fraszyńska is a Polish actress born in Mysłowice, known
for her work in film, television, and theater. She has been a
prominent figure in the Polish entertainment industry. She is
mostly know for her roles inTV series „M jak miłość” and a film
„Psy”.

Administration of Mysłowice
The city of Mysłowice is a city with county rights.The
residents elect 23 councilors to the Mysłowice City Council.
The executive authority of the local government is the
Mayor of the City, who has been DariuszWójtowicz (on the
picture) since 2018. In the recent elections (2018), he
received 15,414 votes of support. The Mysłowice City
Council originated in the Middle Ages, and it was presided
over by the mayor. In 1861, the City Council began operating
under new rules; the role of the mayor was separated from
the position of the Council Chairman.The terms of the City
Council have been counted since 1990, which marks the
abolition of the Municipal National Council.

Sport in Mysłowice
One of the first sports organizations was established in Mysłowice
as early as 1903. It was a branch of the Polish Gymnastic Society
"Sokół" – the Gymnastic Society "Sokół" in Mysłowice, founded by
young people interested in sports from Mysłowice, Brzezinka, and
Kosztowy.The organization functioned until May 21, 1905.
Activities were resumed on February 21, 1919.At that time, the
organization had 80 members, including 30 women. In 1937, Józef
Gondzik served as the president,Walter Kozak as the secretary,
Karol Mucha as the treasurer, andWilhelm Drzymała as the chief.
From 2008 to 2010, the Górnik 09 Mysłowice stadium underwent
reconstruction.The renovation included the pitch and the
grandstand, which was built from scratch.
