I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I
knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course
of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke in me some long
dormant craving to be mentally alive.

● Relies on donations
Receives 1,000 to 1,300 requests per month from all over the U.S.
“Books are tools for learning and opening minds to
new ideas and possibilities. By sending books to
prisoners, we hope to foster a love of reading and
encourage the pursuit of knowledge and
self-improvement.”

education at the Washington
State Reformatory in Monroe
● Offers College Pathway
courses, continuing secondary
education and one-time
lectures and cultural events
● 110 participating students:
55 seeking degrees in
