At the Service Experience Camp 2014 we held a barcamp session discussing how we can preserve a collaborative and egalitarian culture and at the same time introduce organizational structure that supports and enables us to handle a wider range of projects.
In this short presentation you see the team structures we have "prototyped" at Service Innovation Labs so far.
For more info, read our blog post on the barcamp session.

2. PROJECT LEADER
• Project Leader is responsible for the project
in every aspect
• Contact person for the client
• Not applied anymore at SI Labs
• Clear responsibilities in all
circumstances
• Established organisational structure
Barcamp Session - Service Experience Camp 2014
• Difficult for team members to bring up
own ideas -> limits motivation
• PM rarely works on a content-level
• Promotion of people is based on
management skills and not expertise in
their field
• „Dog-eat-dog Mentality“
3. SELF-MANAGED TEAM
• No specified leader or driver
• Everything is decided in the group: plans,
tasks, problems…
• Is applied in some internal projects
(e.g. „Friday Projects“)
• Works well with limited time-frames
and internal projects
• Decisions are concensus based
-> buy-in
• Shared interest and excitement for the
project leads to shared responsibility
• Lack of accountability in client projects
• Who decides if worst comes to worst?
• Lack of ability to act

4. DRIVER MODEL
• Most common project structure at SI Labs
• All team members are on the same hierarchy level
• Driver pushes the project and keeps the overview
• Driver always works on a content-related level too
• Team members have shared respon-sibilities
and opportunities to grow
• Changing roles keep people motivated
and flexible
• Space for emerging ideas and creative
approaches
Barcamp Session - Service Experience Camp 2014
• Fundamental decisions are difficult if
there is no concensus
• Possibly difficult with big teams
