Serkan Turkeli
Research Interests
My research primarily focuses on the intersections of five topics: (1) Management Information System,
(2) Management of Technology, (3) Medical Informatics, (4) Organization Theory, (5) Strategic
Healthcare Management. Storing data, converting data to information and converting information to
knowledge play a fundamental role in many areas such as finance, telecommunication, and medical. The
database management systems are used to store, retrieve data. I worked as a system development
consultant in Central Registry Agency. We developed MKS collecting all data from various Banks, this
project is a Technology Award winner in Turkey. Information is understanding relations between data.
OLAP, OLTP, star schema technologies are using to create information. Knowledge is understanding
patterns in information. I have five years of experience in management by information systems, business
intelligence. I am experienced in Oracle BI, Microstrategy and Qlikview. I am co‐author of 5 peer
reviewed journal publications (2 of them published, 3 of them under review) and 6 peer reviewed
conference publications with proceedings about knowledge management and business analytics.
The goal of my research is understand and define business needs, evaluate alternative approaches,
develop and recommend information system solutions to meet business needs. I use theories from
organization theory and strategic management to understand and define business needs, evaluate
alternative approaches. I use theories from computer science and information system to develop and
recommend information system solution. This combination will have an interdisciplinary impact in
science and engineering. Health is a data intense industry this is why I am working on health domain.
Teaching Interests
The enjoyment of teaching and mentoring students are essential parts of an academic career.
Teaching: My teaching experience began when I was undergraduate student at Bahcesehir University. As
graduate teaching assistant, I gave weekly lectures and problem sessions for C/C++ courses. I really
enjoyed explaining to my friends how to do program. When I was sophomore student I have started
work and during undergraduate, MSc and PhD I financed my education by working in full time/ part time
jobs in a variety of positions. I am the first student in ITU (240 years) history whom completed master
program in one year. After finishing my PhD courses in one year, I decided to work as an academician. I
have taught many courses in various universities for graduate and undergraduate students including
Analysis and Design of Information Systems, Data Analysis and Decision Making, Business Process
Management, Management Information Systems, Project Management for Engineer, Introduction to
Optimization Methods, Quantitative Research Methods, Medical Informatics, BioDesign: Methods for
Innovation in Biomedical Engineering.

2. At the Istanbul Technical University:
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) is one of the best and important university in Turkey. With more than
130 international partnership agreements, the highest number of outgoing Erasmus Exchange students.
