4. Why Digitize Negatives
• Fading: Photos don’t last forever as printed photos are made through a so
called “chromogenic” process which is necessary to achieve the colors in
the negatives. The chemical reactions are unstable that effects that light can
easily damage the colors of the negative.
• Color Shift: Colors of the negatives can also be changed in the dark as the
chemical reactions already begins after that photo is printed.
• Scratching: Negatives can easily be scratched through dust, debris or
incautious handling. The major problem is that the scratches are more or
less invisible and can only be detected after the negative was scanned.
• Natural Disasters: Besides the damaging effects of fading, color shift and
scratching, your negatives could also not be save at home. Due to
unexpected fire, water damage, misplacement or pets your negatives or
photos can be lost forever.

6. Scanning Procedure
The scan process of negatives looks as follows:
• Clean the scanning bed and the negatives with a nice cloth
• Put the negatives into a custom made folder
• Put the folder on the scanning bed and close the scanner
• Set the settings like DPI (3000 DPI), Film Type (Negative) & Color/B&W
• Press the button to scan it

7. Image Enhancement
• Preferably use Adobe Photoshop to process your pictures
• Follow the below steps to enhance the images
Use Stamp Tool to remove the scratches present
Use Color Balance to adjust the colors on the image
Then use Hue/Saturation to fill in the required colors
Finally, use Red-Eye removal if the image has a red eye.

8. Few Important Tips
• Clean the negatives & scanning bed without fail
• Handle the negatives carefully. Use tweezers preferably.
• Use white gloves to prevent finger prints on the negatives
• Keep it away from sunlight to avoid that your color photos fade
• Use high-end equipment to achieve high-quality products
• Always use Digital ICE, otherwise the negative has lot of scratches
