2. Introduction - the client brief
● To plan an idea for a brand new television
drama aimed at 15-21 year olds.
● The budget of the programme is quite low.
● The programme has to be aired on BBC3
(online) Thursdays 9pm.
3. What is the most relevant topic that
applies to all of the audience?
SELF DISCOVERY the process of
acquiring insight into one's own character.
4. Synopsis
● Six gap year students take it upon themselves to go on a
backpacking experience.
● These students have never met and are all from different
backgrounds and have very different personalities.
● The group starts off very isolated, as the venture goes on they
realise an isolated group doesn't work in an isolated
environment this influences their characters to remarkably
change.
● The series tracks the impact of self discovery and everything
that comes with it.
● Explores how one trip of a life time can transform six people's
characters.
5. Aims of the product
● Backpackers as a product follows the BBC's ethos of
enriching people's lives with programmes that inform,
educate and entertain.
● The main purpose of Backpackers is to show the idea of
self discovery, this is something that is relevant as this is
what the target audience are currently going through.
● Self discovery is a key factor of growing up, the series will
show everything that comes with this such as friendships,
relationships, confusion, independence, confidence,
courage, pressure and the fear of not achieving.
6. BBC Ethos
How is it entertaining?
● With the target audience being 15-21 an element of appropriate
comedy will be apparent, this will also make it more appealing to the
audience.
How is it informative?
● It is informative because its informing the audience of situations they
may be in and how to remedy them. The audience could also take
inspiration from the characters within the drama.
How is it educational?
● Showing the audience another part of the world which could be
unknown to some as well as the activities the characters have to
partake in during their backpacking experience.
7. What makes this unique?
Backpackers is unique to the TV drama industry because:
● There is a gap in the market for a teen drama that covers
the idea of growing up but with situations EVERYONE
goes through during self discovery such as fitting in,
making relationships, pleasing parents etc.
● It focuses on everyday situations rather than the
predictable situations found in teen dramas such as teen
pregnancy, depression, drug abuse and bullying.
● Relevant to everyone in the audience as 15-21 is the age
where people are finding their own identity and purpose in
the world as well as making big future plans.
8. Legal and ethical issues
● This drama will be diverse, offering a cast with
all different types of ethical backgrounds.
● Ofcom would rate as a 15, purely because
there is the potential for strong language, sex &
nudity, violence, alcohol, drugs and smoking.
(none of the above will be seen in great detail
or promoted as a good thing)
● The drama will have an opening theme song
and also songs within the drama itself – these
will all be copyright free tracks
