1. Life of a Farmer In Colonial America By Dominic Recchi and Taylor Merry
2. Thesis A farmer’s life is the hardest because he has to balance his work, his family time, his free time, and his religion, all the while staying out of trouble and sending his kids to school.
3. Farming The farmers harvested their own crops. They also bread turkeys, chicken, and other fowl. The wives made the butter. Most farms provided everything for their family.
4. Farmer’s families ate many fruits and vegetables. Most of their food was made from corn. Their main meal of the day was stew at some time in between twelve and three PM. They also hunted for wild game. The farm provided all of the food for the family. Food
5. Colonial families The women cooked everything. All of the work was very hard manual labor. They had a lot of things going on at once in one small room. A lot of people died so they would adopt lots of children, making their house packed and their families big. Everyone worked on the farm.
6. Leisure People on the farm really enjoyed their time off because they worked so hard. They especially enjoyed their “bees” (gatherings). Their favorite games were card games, trock (similar to pool), and other competitions. Sometimes they even hunted for fun.
7. Religion Religion was a big idea in colonial America. There was lots of worshipping throughout the colonies. Many laws were made because of different beliefs. Farmers had to balance their time between work and worship.
8. Education In the colonies, schools were usually one room. There were very few teachers. Students learned the alphabet, arithmetic, spelling, and reading. Farmers worked very hard to send their kids to school.
9. Crime and Punishment Farmers really didn’t want to get in trouble. Possible punishments were public humiliation, fines, whippings, and even death. Even working on a Sunday was considered a crime in some Puritan colonies.
10. Conclusion We have shown you throughout this presentation that the farmers life in colonial America is obviously the toughest. They had to work all day, practice their religion, and provide for their family. We hope you all agree.
