What Is Greenschools

  1. 1. What is greenschools? <ul><li>greenschools is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create greener & healthier learning environments. </li></ul>
  2. 2. We address issues pertaining to: <ul><li>Indoor Air Quality [IAQ]- Cleaning chemicals as they pertain to the school. </li></ul><ul><li>Nutrition - Healthy food habits for schools. </li></ul><ul><li>The 3 Rs … Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- As they pertain to schools. </li></ul>
  3. 3. What we do… <ul><li>We teach those involved with the school community how to make respectful and responsible decisions for the planet and its occupants , with an emphasis on schools. </li></ul>

  6. 6. Why green our schools? <ul><li>The World Health Organization estimates that the environment significantly affects more than 80 percent of major diseases. That would include childhood cancer , diabetes and asthma . In addition, more than a third of diseases in children under the age of five are caused by environmental exposures. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Why green our schools cont. <ul><li>Most Americans spend 90% of their time indoors. </li></ul><ul><li>Individuals with Cancer, Diabetes, Asthma, Allergies, ADHD, and Weakened Immune Systems can be further harmed by unhealthy </li></ul><ul><li>practices inside a school. </li></ul>

Poor IAQ can show itself as… <ul><li>Asthma which is a leading cause of school absenteeism </li></ul><ul><ul><li>30 million people have suffered from asthma-- including 9 million children under the age of 18 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Sick Building Syndrome & Building Related Illnesses </li></ul><ul><li>Allergies and Sensitivities </li></ul><ul><li>Absenteeism , Reduced Productivity & Lower Test Scores </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Over 15 million school days are missed </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>each year due to asthma </li></ul></ul>

Environment…Did you know? <ul><li>Recycling a single aluminum can save enough energy to run a television or computer for three hours. </li></ul><ul><li>Recycling 1 glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt light bulb for 4 hours. </li></ul><ul><li>In the coming decade, Americans are projected to throw away over 11 million tons of glass bottles and jars. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Did you know continued… <ul><li>Every Sunday, the U.S. wastes nearly 90% of all the recyclable newspapers. This wastes about 500,000 trees. </li></ul><ul><li>One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year. </li></ul><ul><li>Every person in the US receives the equivalent of one and a half trees per year or approximately 560 pieces of junk mail per year. </li></ul>
