Editor's Notes
John 14:26,26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 16:7–15,7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
Acts 1:8,8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The ministry of the Holy Spirit exists to empower and bring about the fulfillment of Matthew 28:19-20
Matthew 28:19–20,19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The biggest problem with spiritual gifts in the church today is that hardly anyone talks about them or teaches about them or preaches about them. Either they are neglected altogether or some are at the opposite extreme using them and abusing them. Some abuses: (1) making people go through some kind of gift giving service or ritual; (2) making believers feel they aren’t saved unless they are exercising certain gifts.
Hopefully this evening’s lesson will shed some light and set the stage for the weeks to come.
What is the common metaphor running through each of this passages? A functioning body that is made up of many parts.
Each of us given gifts: 1 Cor 12:7
Holy Spirit dispenses gifts: 1 Cor 12:11
Importance: discussion on the different parts of the body in 1 Cor 12. No one part is more important than another part. See 1 Cor 21:24-26.
Edification: 1 Cor 12:7
There is no part of our bodies that is useless. Every part of the body serves a function from the ear to one’s toe nails. It’s unacceptable for a person to come into the body of Christ and just sit in the pews week after week soaking up the preaching, praying and singing and not doing anything. Such a situation in our physical body would be called a disease!
The heart can’t say to the hands that they have all the responsibility to make the body work correctly. What has the church been doing for years? We hire a minister to “do ministry” which contrary to the original plan (see Ephesians 4:12 as to the purpose of the gifting of certain people in the church).
The Holy Spirit will give us an inner inclination as to our gifting if we seek the Spirit’s face in earnest prayer.
What have others in the church seen at work in you? Don’t go with a crowd mentality but make an honest assessment of what gifting has been observed by others in your life.
What gifts have you tried to display and had success with? If you have the gift of hospitality but most folks would rather avoid you when serving as a greeter, then you probably don’t have that gift. Note that this implies that one is actively involved in the church taking some action in the body of Christ and not waiting for some dispensation from on high.
Grow: You know your spiritual job description; you spiritual self esteem is higher because you know where and how God is using you
Body: Ephesian 4 says that when the gifts mature and are in operation, the whole Body matures.
Glorified: 1 Peter 4:10–11,10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
