2. I think asking how to train a dog to kill rats is the wrong question. In the
video is stated that you don’t have to train your dog to kill rats. It’s rather a
matter of choosing the right breed. But even before you think of controlling a rat
plague with dogs make sure it is legal where you live.
Next think about what happens when you choose to let your dog kill rats.
Normally he will get so obsessive about it that you can hardly train him for
anything else except there are absolutely no mice or rats in the vicinity.
If you settled those questions let’s see what breeds are best for this purpose. I
think all terriers are appropriate for this job. Terriers are bred for thousands of
years to help humans to keep their huts and housings free from mice and rats.
Next all breeds for hunting to the death are suitable. While terriers don’t need
any training those other breeds might need some persuasion. To do that get hold
of rats (e.g. with traps). Bring dog and rats outside and release one rat near the
dog. Urge him on the rat. After a couple of repetitions you will see whether your
dog found his hunting instincts or not. When not you will hardly have a dog
suitable for the job. Keep in mind that in some countries it’s illegal to train your
dog with live animals.
My feeling is that training pointers and retrievers and to a certain degree herding
dogs for rat control is abusive. Those dogs are bred not to kill. You don’t even
want your pointer to touch the game. Retrievers should take the game so gently
that you don’t see he had it in his fang.
Well that’s my thoughts about how to train a dog to kill rats. Of course it’s
completely up to you if you want your lab hunting rats. Try the method above IF

realy never grew or put to mutch wieght on but her sisters are twice the size but she is very fit
