1. a look at hair loss
More than four million Brits are suffering from such intense stress it is making their hair fall out,
according to a new study. One in ten adults across the UK is enduring hair loss or pre-mature
baldness related to stress conditions. Women are suffering more than men, with 74 per cent
saying they are stressed compared to 59 per cent of men, according to a survey of 3,000 people
by Hairhelmet. co. uk. The generation of mums who have been making an effort to do it all - work,
keep up a home and relationship and raise children - are the worst hit, paying the price for long
hours at work and home with stress-related sickness. The survey found that females between the
age of 35 and 45 are the most likely to suffer from stress-related conditions such as eczema,
migraines and high blood pressure. And 12 per cent of women say stress makes their hair fall out
compared to just eight per cent of men. Alopecia areata, where random bald patches on the head
manifest, is often a result of stress. It can lead to alopecia totalis, complete baldness, like that
suffered by television presenter Gail Porter. Gail, 35, lost all her hair due to stress after the
breakdown of her marriage last year. Anne McCracken, stress expert for the International Stress
Management Association, said:" Stress puts the whole body out of balance and weakens the
immune system." People who are stressed can have symptoms like insomnia or hair loss that go
on for years and never get better because they don't ever stop being stressed.".
The survey found that the most common cause of stress is work, with one third of respondents
naming that as the most stressful component of their life. Work was followed by children (20 per
cent), money (15 per cent) and relationships (10 per cent). Anthony Hancock, from Hairhelmet.
co. uk, says:" This survey acknowledges that we are a nation of seriously stressed people." We
know from talking to our customers that a lot of people suffer from thinning hair or hair loss due to
stress." Paradoxically, losing your hair can also be very stressful, as our personal appearance is
very important to us, which is why so many people want to try our product to restore their thinning
locks.".
Forty-one per cent say stress makes all of them smoke or drink more and an extraordinary 81 per
cent say they argue more with their friends and family when stressed.
One in two women say they can't sleep at night and a massive 72 per cent say they turn to
comfort eating to ease their stress.
