9. What makes sK Fiber shafts
so UniQUE?
THE manUFaCTURinG PRoCEss
SK FIBER roll-wrapped golf club shafts feature sophisticated prepreg lay up and strict attention to quality
control. The production of SK FIBER golf shafts is out-sourced to our fabrication facility in South Korea who
purchase advanced composite materials from TORAY, the world’s largest manufacturer of polyacrylonitrile
based carbon fibers (12000 Tons). With applications found in a diverse range of products from fishing rods,
golf club shafts and ski poles, to aircraft primary structure and satellites, TORAY’s strength’s include:
Global operations with production bases in Japan, the United States and Europe.
A superior lineup of carbon fiber products of the highest quality.
A technological competitive edge attributable to the stable quality of its prepreg products.
Solid positioning in aircraft applications.
HiGH sTREnGTH modUlUs CaRBon FiBERs
We incorporate only the highest tensile strength and highest strain to failure carbon fibers available in the
world. Our lay up formulas use modulus carbon never twisted fiber products like the T700S, T800H, M30S
and MJ series PAN based carbon fibers material in the composition of an SK FIBER golf shaft. Pan-based
modulus fibers are superior to pitch based fibers due to the tensile and compression strengths.
PG 9
10. THE FaBRiCaTion PRoCEss // PaRT i
The sheeter/cutter unrolls the prepreg and cuts it at the appropriate length and fiber angles to make the pattern pieces,
called “flags.” Depending on shaft model, from five to eight flags will make up a typical shaft lay up kit.
Technicians roll-wrap our golf shafts using pre-kitted prepreg materials specific for the model being produced. During
production, a technician mounts a mandrel (mold) on a roll-wrapping machine and inputs the wrapping program into the
roll wrapper’s controller. The program (specific to the model) comprises numerous “wraps” layers around the mandrel. The
controller translates the number of wraps to rotations, which are specified in degrees - 360° means one complete wrap or
ply, 1080° is three wraps, etc. To minimize off-axis fibers and loss of modulus (a measure of a material’s stiffness) the lay
up program controls ply deviation to no more than .3° from the programmed load paths.
To successfully roll wrap a golf shaft to meet SK FIBER standards requires the exact placement of each subsequent flag
on the mandrel to maintain laminate symmetry and prevent excessive material overlaps, which can lead to what we call
“the spine”, a zone of higher stiffness that extends from the butt to tip. Eliminating “spine” through precise flag placement
and avoiding gaps where plies butt together during lay up is critical to passing our quality control standards. All shaft de-
signs are digitally and visually inspected for potential gaps prior to fabrication.
A typical SK FIBER shaft lay up consists of six initial wraps, at an angle of ± 45°, to control torque, followed by several
axial (lengthwise) wraps to control stiffness and strategically place hoop plies to control flex and strength. Particular atten-
tion is paid to the tip section just above the hosel area. Because of its small diameter and proximity to the club head it is
prone to failure. The tip section may receive not only extra hoop wraps but “floating” inserts of high-strength prepreg, typi-
cally carbon-boron/epoxy hybrid prepreg, particularly for premium pro-grade shafts with a higher kick point.
PG 10
11. THE FaBRiCaTion PRoCEss // PaRT ii
Once the lay up is complete, the shaft is over wrapped with clear polypropylene shrink film, which helps to strengthen the
lay up during oven cure. Typical cure takes two to three hours, starting at ambient and ramping up to 275° F. Shafts are
normally cured in batches of 100. After cure, mandrels are hydraulically extracted. Automated equipment cut, sand and
wash the cured shafts. Technicians visually inspect, flow and mark the neutral zone for painting, we identify the neutral
zone on the butt with yellow for the painters to paint the SK FIBER graphics at 12 O’clock.
Our final in-plant quality control procedure includes dynamic analysis of selected shafts in an oscillation analysis testing
device that rotates and flexes shafts to verify the flex, torque and weight.
