More about Venice
VENICE’S REPUTATION
 Venice was:-
 Very Wealthy.
 A place of entertainment and
pleasure.
A big tourist attraction.
* [Venice in the Elizabethan era
can be compared to today’s
Vegas]
BUSINESS IN VENICE
There was a lot of trade happening
in Venice
They controlled a very large sea
empire…
People of different kinds of
Nationalities came and did trade in
Venice!
STANCE ON PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT
CULTURES
 People of different cultures were
treated much better than in
Elizabethan London since they had
people of all nationalities come and
trade.
 (But there was still conflict
between the Jews and the Christians
in Venice)
ANTI-SEMITISM IN VENICE
 Even though they were more
accepting to other cultures in
Venice, there was still many
examples of Anti-Semitism.
 Jews had to live in Ghettos.
 To identify Jews easily, they had to
wear a red hat at all times..
[For Jews, breaking these rules was
punishable to death.]
HOW JEWS WERE TREATED IN THE
ELIZABETHAN PERIOD
Throughout history, people of
Jewish ancestry were treated poorly
in many parts of the world.
Constantly in search of a safe place
to live, a number of Jews moved to
England following the Norman
Conquest of 1066..
HOW JEWS ARE TREATED NOW!
Classical anti-Semitism is nowhere
near the levels at which it once
was. However, there are still some
hate crimes, plus the problem of
terrorism.
Now Jews are also treated as equal
as others..
