The first place to go is SLIS’s website to see a list of organizations. Explore the SLIS website for opportunities to become involved. There are organizations that are general, such as ALA, with many different sections, state organizations, and organizations for specific interests such as music, archives, law, theology, etc.
Every student enrolled in LIBR 200 receives a complimentary membership to ALA.
ALA Connect is another way for you to find and connect with other members around professional interests, issues, advocacy, your job, the work of the Association, meeting up with friends & colleagues when you attend ALA conferences, and the like. Some folks have referred to this as "ALA's social network," but it's more accurate to think of it as ALA's professional network, an online version of what has traditionally taken place in the physical world. Each division and community in ALAhas its own ALA Connect space. When an announcement went out on a listserv that I subscribe to for an opportunity to be involved in an informal test of the new cataloging standard that will be replacing RDA, I signed up. ALA ALCTS was the forum for collaborating with 25 others in testing serial records using the new description guidelines. I have a membership in both ALCTS and LITA. Once the testing period was over, the group met at the ALA Midwinter conference in San Diego and I got to meet many of the other testers in person. When you start to refine your interests in the library profession, you will start seeing familiar faces at future conferences and workshops.

www.asindexing.orgThis is a good organization to become involved with if you are interested in taxonomies, vocabulary design and creating BOTB indexes. Very often in SLIS program you will be asked to conduct field studies that involve interviewing professionals in various aspects of library profession. ASI is a good resource if you decide to take LIBR 247 Vocabulary design and indexing.
Many of the organizations have Facebook and Twitter pages, or other ways to connect with its members that go beyond the formal website. Members stat up to date by following or subscribing to various feeds, pages and tweets.
