On June 23rd 2016 the UK voted in a referendum to leave the European Union. Prime Minister David Cameron resigned the morning after the vote and a few weeks later, Theresa May was elected leader of the Conservative Party and new Prime Minister The process of Brexit has begun although the timing of the decision to invoke Article 50 of the EU treaty remains uncertain Once Article 50 is invoked, there is a maximum period of two years before the UK finally leaves the EU. The terms of the UK’s new economic relationship with the EU also remain uncertain.

Withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU), often shortened to Brexit is a political aim of some political parties, advocacy groups, and individuals in the United Kingdom. In 1975 a referendum was held on the country's membership of the European Economic Community (EEC), a precursor to the EU. The outcome of the vote was that the country continued to be a member of the EEC. More recently the European Union Referendum Act 2015 has been passed to allow for a referendum on the country's membership of the EU, with a vote to be held on 23 June 2016.

The EU has suffered a series of crises over the past few years, leading many experts to continually predict the downfall of Europe. The Eurozone crisis uncovered a number of economic issues that need to be dealt with in order to improve the overall competitiveness of the EU economy. There are two reasons that explain why the EU was particularly vulnerable to the global financial crisis: 1. The single market united countries that had very different economic structures, as well as huge disparities in terms of their development; 2. Due to the political reasons the Economic and Monetary Union combined a supranational monetary policy with the almost individual economic policies of all the EU member states. The acute phase of crisis (the threat that a number of countries could go bankrupt and leave the Eurozone) was mitigated.

In 2010, the group of European think tanks which we lead, published a report addressed to a new leadership in the European Union (EU). In 2014, welcoming a new team of European leaders, we again call attention to the importance of a global perspective in European policy-making. The report is issued in the name of our four institutions and of the 26 authors who have contributed to the text. It calls for a new understanding of the EU’s global role, and in particular, a new approach to international development. The key message is that the EU’s ambitions for its own citizens prosperity, peace and environmental sustainability cannot be divorced from its global responsibilities and opportunities. As the title of the report suggests, Europe’s problems need global solutions, and global problems need European action. A shared collective effort is in our common interest. Seen from within Europe, the rest of the world is a vital source of raw materials, manufactured products, markets, innovation and cultural enrichment... These are: 1. The world economy. Is the world economy becoming more equitable, resilient and democratic? 2. Environmental sustainability. Is the world set on a more sustainable path, in which the EU is playing its part internally and externally, especially with regard to climate change and the necessity of a green economy? 3. Peace and security. Is the world becoming more peaceful and secure? 4. Democracy and human rights. Is the world better governed and more democratic? Is there greater respect for human rights around the world? And is the EU acting effectively to understand and support democratic political change? 5. Poverty and inequality. Have poverty and inequality declined? And is the EU acting effectively to understand and tackle the drivers of poverty and inequality? We do not contend that the EU offers a panacea. However, faced with global challenges, the EU is often better placed to act than its individual member states. This is because of its economic weight, including its position as the world’s largest trading bloc. It is also because the EU can act in a more neutral way than individual member states. The EU’s role has to be seen in the wider context of member state contributions

Since its creation in 1999, the goal of the Master in Economics and Finance (MEF) offered by Universidad de Navarra has been that of preparing competent professionals. The MEF provides students with the necessary analytical and theoretical foundations for both entering into a PhD program and working in companies that look for rigorously trained specialists (such as national or international organizations, central banks, investment and commercial banks, economic or financial consultancies, and regulators). After gaining a fundamental understanding of Finance, Econometrics, Micro- and Macroeconomics, Mathematics and Statistics in the first term, the second term is more applied leading eventually to topics-oriented courses in the third term in which students work with data and acquire programming skills. Throughout the academic year, the students attend research seminars and present working papers or published articles to gain a deeper understanding of economic and financial research, which culminates in the Master thesis. The best theses have been published in refereed academic journals. Our alumni work currently for institutions like the Inter-American Development Bank, the Bank of Spain, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) or market regulators in Spain; for leading investment banks like Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley, both in the US and the UK; for economic consultancies like Compass Lexecon or management consultancies like Oliver Wyman or Indra; or in other companies, such as, as Chief Risk Manager of Repsol, Energy Demand Analyst at OPEC, in Arcelor Mittal, in Thomson Reuters or in The Toronto-Dominion Bank. Alumni which decided for a career in academia recently moved to universities, such as, Columbia University (Assistant Professor), Rice University in the US, London School of Economics, The London Business School in Europe, IESE Business School.
