This is a powerpoint that I have created which showcases my analysis of different music magazines, I picked out different magazine front covers, contents pages and double page spreads and then talked about the connotations of the different conventions of the magazines.
2. Front Cover Analysis
The word ‘exclusive’ makes the
reader more interested in the
article, and will make them
want to read the magazine.
The masthead shows the
reader what the
magazine is, it is a
recognisable symbol for
this magazine
These contain artists that
the reader will like or
want to know about so
they will want to read
into it.
There are teasers on
the front cover, these
are to draw the reader
in and make them want
to buy and read the
magazine
Jay-Z is wearing smart clothes, this
sets him apart from his peers, who
would usually be shirtless and
have bling and tattoos all over
them.
3. The line on top of the
magazine says that it is a
brand new issue, which an
extended bit, this makes the
reader want to read it
because it is something that
they haven’t seen or heard
about before.
It is celebrating 40 years of
David Bowie, this will make all
of the Bowie fans want to buy
and read about his best bits
and the unseen photos.
The story about drugs and a
famous person will make the
reader want to buy the
magazine, it will draw them in.
Makes music enthusiasts want to learn
about the rock and roll genre, and will
make them read it
The red colouring of the masthead
and the text makes it stand out from
the other magazines. The red
contrasts with light coloured
background.
Front Cover Analysis
4. Front Cover Analysis
The artist is over the
title of the magazine,
this shows that firstly
she is an important
feature to this
magazine, and secondly
you don’t need all of
the magazines title to
know that the
magazine is Kerrang!
The main image is an image of the
lead singer of ‘Paramore’ she is
putting up two fingers and looks as
if she doesn’t care about anything,
and she doesn’t care what people
think of her.
The secondary stories are
there so that it will still draw
the reader in and make them
think that firstly, the whole
magazine isn’t about one
thing, and secondly that if you
don’t like the main stories,
there are still stories for the
magazine to fall back on if the
main doesn’t float your boat.
The ‘plus’ section gives a list, a
smaller and less detailed
contents page which is on the
front cover so the reader knows
exactly what is in the magazine.
‘Free’ is in white, which stands
out, this is to bring in the reader,
so that they will get this free
poster.
5. Contents Page Analysis
This image makes the reader want
to know about this person, so they
will go through the whole magazine
looking for it.
These are the main
features and the main
contents of the magazine,
they give small amounts of
information about the
piece, and will make you
want to read it
There is a secondary contents
section, and it is about fashion, this
tells the reader that there will be
some products that the magazine will
want you to buy and order from the
magazine.
The page design is simple and
quite empty, compared to a
front cover, this is so that the
reader can read the contents
without being distracted.
The title ‘CONTENTS’ is written in
a strange way, this is make the
magazine seem more modern or
even futuristic, and to make the
magazine have a unique feel to it.
The way that the ‘V’
(Vibes logo) is presented
in the background, and
the way the ‘CONTENTS’
title is written, it is all
associated with the ‘Vibe’
magazine.
This is a very masculine picture, it
is to attract both male and female
readers, but for different reasons,
the males for the masculine
boost, and the females because
they may find this man attractive.
6. Contents Page Analysis
The pictures on the contents pages are
numbered, this means that you can
easily find out which story this is
associated with because of the line of
stories on the right hand side.
The actual contents of the
magazine are numbered, these
are page numbers, but they also
match to any pictures that are
on the contents page.
The contents are split up into
sections, this would suggest that
this magazine takes great care in
making sure their reader gets
the most out of their purchase.
The editorial takes up a bit of the page, this shows that
the main editor cares about this magazine and the
people reading it, I think this because of how much he
has written, and the fact that he probably writes this
much for it each issue, and that shows care.
This contents page is
neither masculine or
feminine, there are no
outstanding masculine
or feminine features.
The use of both bright pink and
bright blue shows that this
contents page, and then
probably the whole magazine is
gender neutral, and isn’t made
for one gender.
There is a promotional item,
that you can get from getting
this magazine, and the contents
page will tell you the page that
you will have to go to so that
you can redeem your item.
7. The main story is obviously
about Duffy, because of the
quote, the picture and the
first story on the contents
page is about Duffy
There are only five features
mentioned on the contents
page, this is because these are
the most important stories,
these are the ones which will
bring in the most readers,
because they are the most
interesting
The picture shows Duffy playfully
threatening the camera, and in
turn the reader, with a ukulele,
this is giving the impression, that
the story is about how Duffy is
making a comeback, or how she
is some sort of fight with
someone, and how ‘Spin’
magazine has gotten the insight
to the things that are happening
with Duffy
There is a quote from Duffy,
this is to add to the readers
want to read about this main
story, it gives little
information about what is
happening and this makes
the reader want to find out
more.
The ‘Spin’ magazine logo is covered up slightly by Duffy, this is also showing how
the magazine cares more about the Duffy story then promoting their own
magazine.

8. The only picture on the
whole double page spread is
an image of the person which
the story is about, this is so
the reader is not distracted
from the main story.
The main story was obviously
set up in an interview fashion,
we can tell this because the
questions that the artist was
asked are black with a white
background but the answers
to these questions are in black
with no background.
Even though this question has
the least amount of answer for
it, it has been used as a large
question, this is because the
reader could maybe associate
their Fridays with the artists,
the reader will find this
question relatable because they
can directly compare their lives
to the artists
The only thing in the double page
spread which is not apart of the
story is the ‘advert’ for the
‘Kerrang’ website. This shows that
the magazine wants people to get
online, and encourage them to
look at the magazine online with
the promise of more news that you
cant get from the magazine on
paper.
There are lights going around the outside
of the pages, these lights would usually be
seen in a dressing room, around a mirror,
usually for a star, so the magazine is
implying that this artist is a star.

9. Double Page Spread Analysis
By using different sizes of
fonts and the fact that if
looks like it has been cut
from different newspaper
stories gives the
impression that Lily Allen
is very outgoing and they
have a very non-caring
attitude to what people
think of her.
The actual article is a lot smaller than
a usual article is, usually the article is
covering one half of the double page
spread, but this time it is at the
bottom of one of the pages, this
automatically puts emphasis on the
picture and the quote from the artist.
Lily Allen is giving off a vibe
that she doesn’t care that
much about the comments
about her by the public , but
she feels like she needs to do
something to put any agitation
to rest.
Lily Allen is wearing a red and black
shirt, and this contrasts with the
black and white, formal, theme of
the double page spread, this could
also add to the vibe that she is
giving off of that she doesn’t care
that much of what people think of
her. Her name in the article is also
in red, along with the writer of the
page ‘Anna McMillan’ and the page
numbers, this is to draw specific
attention to specific parts of the
double page spread
10. The picture of Lady Gaga is
very sexually suggestive,
this could say many things
about Lady Gaga, firstly
that she is very open about
her sexuality, or that she is
very confident in her body
and in her looks that she
feels fine with taking a
picture like this.
The ‘Lady Gaga’ at the top of the page is very small, which is
unusual for a double page spread, but the editors must
obviously think that everyone will be able to recognise Lady
Gaga from the picture, and they wont have to look for who the
article is about.
The ‘Lady’ and the ‘Gaga’ from
‘Lady Gaga’ are two different
fonts, the ‘lady’ is smaller and
in italics and in lower case,
when the ‘Gaga’ is in capitals
and is in a larger font. This
could suggest that the
magazine is suggesting that
Lady Gaga has two different
personalities, not specifically
alter egos but two
personalities, her lady side and
her more dangerous side,
which she expresses in some of
her more explicit songs.
The enlarged and vibrantly
coloured red ‘L’ is obviously
referring to Lady Gaga herself.
The only link that the red has
to the rest of the article is the
red ‘Q’ logo in the bottom
right corner. Red as a colour
has connotations to lust and
sexuality which directly links
to the picture of Lady Gaga
and helps to boost her image
of a very sexual and
sexualised artist.
The colour scheme for the article
is made up of four main colours,
grey, black, white and red, the
red obviously stands out against
the white, black and grey.
