Question 2
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
2. Ideas for our video and print products came from a range of existing media.
One of the main inspirations for our main product and ancillary texts was
the Rihanna Loud digipak and Only Girl video. This was the main
inspiration because it displayed continuity throughout the house styles
and themes through different media platforms. Consistency was the
main aim when producing our digipak and music video and we tried to
ensure we kept a uniformed look to our print products. We used Adobe
Photoshop to create the digipak and magazine advert which allowed us
to produce a realistic looking CD and magazine design.
3. The image above is the only typography of her name we used throughout the
digipak and magazine advert. The consistency of the typography ensured
that her name was memorable and imprinted in the audiences name. The
sans serif bold font displays the importance in her name and stands out in
the audiences view. The simplicity of the text is conventional to the acoustic
genre as reflects authentic and relaxed nature of the music.
An example of another R&b acoustic artist album font is John
legend in the Evolver album. This text is similar to mine as it is
also bold and simple and is an example of the text reflecting the
acoustic genre.
4. TEENAGE CULTURE
Throughout our print product the teenage culture is represented through our artist. The artist’s
costume is casual throughout the music video and print products which allow the target
audience (young adults) to identify with the artist and their music. (insert image showing this).
The artist herself is 18 which is an example of the ages of our target audience. It is important for
the audience to feel similar to the artist therefore by the artist being a young adult it attracts
other young adults out there. Female teenagers are represented in the media as loud and
wearing excessive make up however our video and print products go against stereotypes. This is
evident in the artist limited amount of make up which represents her as pure and sensible. In the
video she is to herself with her guitar busking which connotes her to be very focused on her
music. Females in the music industry are represented in sexual and seductive ways and many of
their audience are highly influenced by this which is why these stereotypes exist. The importance
of representing our female artist against stereotypes is that it spreads a positive moral to the
target audiences and gives the female audience a positive public figure to look up to.
5. HOW THEY WORK AS A PACKAGE
The insert and the poster both use
the same colour code which is
navy blue and white. The uniform
of colours across different media
creates a link between them. The
colours were chosen because they
reflect the colours of the guitar
which signifies that it is an
important aspect of the single.
The guitar is present in a all of
the product including the
music video and this acts as a
unique selling point of the
artist. It acts as part of the
artists identity and enables the
audience to distinguish her
from other artists.
The front cover and
back cover are black
and white which
support the
consistency and of the
digipak. The effect of
this is that the
audience can identify it
as one and also gives a
realistic look.
6. HOW THEY WORK AS A PACKAGE
Overall the CD digipak, magazine advert and music
video work well as a package because they all were
effective in representing our artists genre and going
against stereotypes. However in retrospect the whole
digipak should have had the black and white effect to
add to the consistency. However although the insert
was not in black and white the colours still matched
the colours on the magazine advert which helped
solve the problem.
7. Our magazine advert will appear in magazines such as R&B and Vibe because they both have an
audience of young people who listen to r&b music.
The CD digipak will be sold in music shops such as KMV. However due to the large scale of online
music downloads it will also be sold on iTunes.
The music video will be shown on channels such as VIVA and MTV becuase they are very well
known and established channels who generate a large viewing audience and play the same
R&B acoustic genre type.
Promotion of the artist and the single will be on social networking such as YouTube, Twitter,
MySpace and Facebook. Through these social networks it will get people talking and generating
a buzz which is a very effective way of promotion in this day and age.
The artist will also do live appearances and performances on talk shows e.g. Alan Carr Chatty man.
She will also go live gigs and performances on events such as the Hackney Weekend.
