1. Analysis of Source I<br />The quotation from Freedom and the Welfare State demonstrates the author’s support of a welfare state and their belief of its ability to provide individuals with security. By analyzing the excerpt, it is understood that with a welfare state, people are free to grow as individuals, receive credit for their talents, and pursue happiness by living without fear of real hunger, real homelessness, or oppression by reason of their differences. Through these understandings, the ideological perspectives of Modern Liberalism such as individual rights and freedoms, individual interests sustained through the community, and the importance of embracing a welfare state are supported.<br />Analysis of Source II<br />The excerpt from Vital Speeches of the Day provides support against a socialist community. The author strictly states that Socialism does nothing but take property from the “Haves” to give it to the “Have-nots”, and that nothing but domestic poverty and the spread of world hunger will develop. They also develop the idea that a Socialist community looks at production as being magical and without effort, and that the producers do not get credit for their work. The author concentrates on aspects of the economy to support their belief that as producers and consumers, there is a need for economic independence and freedom, individual rights, responsibilities, and freedoms, and individual interests, to maintain a sustainable economy locally, and globally. Through these ideologies, the author demonstrates their support of Classical Liberalism, and their relation of ideologies to Adam Smith and the Invisible Hand Theory.<br />Analysis of Source III<br />The cartoon which displays two mature, well dressed men in an oversized room full of windows, bookshelves and curtains stretching from floor to ceiling, who are reading a news paper which reads “ Good Times: Even the poor gain”. The gentleman’s reply to this headline is, “Well, if the economic boom benefits everyone, what good is it”, demonstrating that the author of this cartoon recognizes a conflict of interests within society. Some would look at the headline as a benefit to all of society, but when this wealthy man reads about it he feels there is something wrong with the economic system. Through this cartoon, the ideologies of Classical Liberalism, in the aspects of self interest, completion, and economic freedom are embraced. The only difference with this compared to other examples of embracing Classical Liberalism is that these two men feel that the benefits of Classical liberalism and the economic boom should only apply to their collective, the wealthy community. <br />How do they all relate?<br />Each source provided is related to the interests of the individual within a collective. In the first source, the author believes the community as a collective should work towards providing for the interests of the individual through a welfare state. In the second source, the author demonstrates their belief that individual interests should be embraced by the collective community, which will in turn help society as a whole. In the third source, the author demonstrates the conflicting interests that are seen within a community, and how certain collectives within a community can be every individualistic and hold their individual interests higher than the interests of the collective society. In each source, individual interests are embraced within a collective, but they do not all embraced individual interests for the same reason within the collective.<br />
