3. Concept
• Space subway is a system that can:

move at the speed of an airplane or even higher be as convenient as a subway
Maximum speed of around 1000 Km/h
• The operation is based on the magnet levitation technique inside a vacuum tunnel.
5. Design – How does it look?
• Should space subway
look like these?

Max. speed of 450 km/h

Max. speed of 505 km/h

6. Design – How does it look?
• It is named Space Subway

Proposed design
7. Design – The tunnel
• The tunnel system includes many independent modules with length of tens of
kilometers connected together.
7
• Each module has
- two controllable gates at the two ends
- Controllable side emergency gates
- pumps to pump the air out to make vacuum
environment and pump the air in for
emergency cases.
8. Design – Station module
• The station module is about 1 km length
• When the train comes
- two gates at the two ends close
- and the pumps will pump the air in
- then the gates of the train and the station open for
people get off and on.
• The inverse process will happen
when the train goes out.
9. Design – The train
• The train has many cars with
magnets around.
• Oxygen is supplied either from
compressed air tanks or an oxygen
generator (which can form oxygen
from the electrolysis of water)

11. Feasibility
• 150 years ago, flying like birds was impossible but
Wright brothers made it possible in 1903.
11
• 50 years ago, going to the Moon was still
impossible but NASA made it possible in 1969.
• I believe that we can make Space Subway
possible in the future.
Thank you for coming. Have you ever asked yourself what will be the future of high speed land transportation? What's after Shinkansen technology? My name is N D T, a PhD candidate in Electronics and optics, from Ritsumaikan University. I am here today to tell you about my idea of developing a new system named Space Subway. This will be our future of high speed land transportation [change slide].
My presentation will be in three parts. First, I’ll describe what space subway is. Second, we will take a look at its proposed design and how it works. Finally, we will finish by considering the feasibility of this idea. My talk should only take 10 minutes, so please save your questions until the end. Lets get started now by finding out what is the space subway? [change slide].
Space subway is a system that can [click] move at the speed of an airplane or even higher and [click] be as convenient as a subway. As you can see in the left figure, this is the new Boeing 787 model, it can fly at max, speed of about 1000 km/h. [click] The operation of Space subway is based on the magnet levitation technique inside a vacuum tunnel. [change slide]
-With this system, you can travel about 1500 km from Osaka to Saporo in about 1.5 hours [click], from Hanoi to HCM city about 1800 km in about 2 hours [click], and from Sydney to Melboune about 900 km in about 1 hour. Would you like use space subway when it is available? - Now, lets move on and see what should be a proper design for space subway. [change slide]
You may know these high speed train systems. The top figure shows the high speed monorail train which already implemented in Germany with max speed of about 450 km/h. The bottom figure shows the new Chuo Shinkansen which is now in test stage in Japan with max speed up to 505 km/h. [click] These two systems use the same technique called magnet levitation. The trains float by magnetic force and slide on the air. [click] However the air resistance limits the speed and makes them imbalance. Next slide, I will show you the proposed design of the space subway. The Transrapid is a high speed train that can be used for both passenger services and goods transportation. It is manufactured and marketed by Transrapid Intl. GmbH & Co. KG, a partnership of Siemens and ThyssenKrupp. It is a German high-speed monorail train using magnetic levitation and can hit a speed of 450 km/hour (270.3 mph).
Here is the proposed design. It includes a vacuum tunnel (without the air inside). The train will fly inside this tunnel [click]. That’s the reason why it is named space subway. The green bars are levitation magnets and the blue bars are control magnets. Next we will take a closer look at the design of the tunnel [change slide].
This figure shows design of the vacuumtunnel. It consists of many independent modules with length of tens of kilometers joined together [click]. Each module has … This raises the question of how station module is? [change slide].
This figure shows the design of the station module. It is about 1 km length. [click] …[click]… Next, I will describe the design of the train [change slide].
- The top figure shows the proposed train. The bottom figure is the cross section of the tunnel and the train … Oxygen is supplied …[clik]…So how does space subway work? I will describe the working principles in the next slide [change slide].
- This figure shows the cross section of the tunnel and the train. With green bars are levitation magnets and the blue bars are the control magnets. The magnets are attached around the train. In balance stage, the center of the train undergoes four forces. The first one is the gravity force Fg. The second one is magnetic force from the ceiling lev. Magnet Fc. And magnetic forces from two ground lav. Magnets Fl1, Fl2. Fl1 = Fl2 in magnitude, the sum of these two forces is Fl. Then when We have this balance equation, the train will float inside the tunnel. So what is the purpose of the control magnets here. It will push the train forward in running stage or brake the train when we want to slow down or stop it.- In running stage, the movement direction is like this, the balance forces are the same So lets remove them to make this figure clearer. Two control magnets make two equal-amplitude forces Fr1 and Fr2. The sum is force Fr which has the same direction as the movement direction and Fr will push the train running forward. In braking stage, the movement direction now is like this, the balance forces are the same So lets remove them to make this figure clearer. Two control magnets change the directions of two equal-amplitude forces Fb1 and Fb2 with regard to the movement direction. The sum is force Fb which has opposite direction with movement direction and Fb will brake the train slowing down. Because there is no air resistance, when the train obtains the desired speed, it does not need running forces anymore.- Lets finish by considering feasibility of this idea [change slide].
- As you know, 150 years…. Here is the photo of Wright brothers, and here is the first controllable fly of human being. And 50 years ago …. This is president Kennedy when he talked about going to the moon in 1962. and here is Neil Armstrong with the first walk of human being on the moon. So I believe that …Its time to sum up my talk [change slide]
In my presentation, I have describe the concept of my idea. Then, we have looked at the proposed design and the working principles. We have also discussed the feasibility of this idea. Lets believe that space subway will be the future of high speed land transportation. Finally, I would like to quote Albert Einstein’ speech: Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. So let your imagination do its work.
