In the last 12 months, I’ve started off every presentation I gave with a discussion of the economy; it was a weather report and the weather was bad.This will be the last conference I will start off discussing the weather.
While there are still difficulties we all face as a result of the economic reset, it is no longer the focus of the industry. The industry is moving to a new phase of growth. For Microsoft, this means moving our focus back to delivering world-class innovation.
Most people know of Microsoft’s focus on the desktop architecture; be it servers, laptops or PCs. We’ve released Windows 7 about 6 months ago and it has proven to be the fastest selling operating system of all time.
But we are also focused on expanding the innovations that Windows 7 offers to other platforms that we see exploding in both growth and functionality. We see the growth of smart phones and connected TVs as an extension of the connected experiences originally driven by the PC.<Build>And connected experiences reach beyond these specific platforms. Connected experiences reach into any number of screens; be they small, medium or large.
These connected experiences are enabled by services and are powered by a range of devices including handheld terminals, Point-of-Service devices and digital signage in the enterprise to personal media players, digital photo frames and connected media devices in the consumer segment.<Build>And it across this spectrum of devices, technologies and services that we in Windows Embedded are focused on. Windows Embedded is the family is the platform of software and services that bring the innovation and power of Windows to the huge world of connected, service-oriented devices.
I’d like to start by focusing my attention on the enterprise segment of specialized devices.
We see a clear trend in the enterprise of device proliferation. Device deployment in the enterprise is being driven by the monetary advantages specialized devices bring to efficiencies, revenue generation and device data driving business intelligence.
The advantage that Windows on specialized devices brings to the enterprise is the ability to seamlessly connect embedded devices to the Microsoft back office, manage these devices with system Center Manager and to have the common development environment of Visual Studio available to embedded developers.
And it is with the enterprise in mind that I am proud to announce the release of Windows Embedded Standard 7. Based on the same technology as Windows 7 for the desktop, Windows Embedded Standard 7 is a componentized version of Windows 7 and offers Active Directory policies, Failover Clustering and the power of Silverlight to the world of embedded devices in the enterprise.
And the power of Windows 7 stretches into the range of the embedded products offered as part of the Windows Embedded family of Software and Services including the embedded focused “Windows Embedded Enterprise” and “Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2.”
It was roughly 6 months ago at ESC Boston that I announced the CTP of Windows Embedded Standard 7. Since then, a number of companies have adopted the technology and proven it to be a solid, innovative and enterprise-tested release. I’d like to show you some of the enthusiasm coming from a few of the companies that have worked with Windows Embedded Standard 7.
We see Windows Embedded Standard playing in any number of spaces. One area we are particularly interested in, however, is the retail environment.As it currently stands, information exchange happens in two distinct steps, and distinct manners, in the retail environment.During the shopping experience, the consumer is faced with static, non-personalized messaging coming from signage throughout the store. The next step that the retailer is guaranteed to engage with the customer is at the point of sale. Here, the retailer has a targeted exchange..but it is an exchange that happens after the customer has finished shopping.<Build>We see these two engagement opportunities evolving and merging. The point at which they merge is digital signage. This is signage that is much more than static, digital messaging. These are sophisticated embedded devices that are highly interactive and able to target information to distinct audience segments.
But it is not just Microsoft that sees Digital Signage as a huge growth opportunity, Intel has also invested in the vision of Digital Signage and the technology needed to realize its full potential.Intel has built a proof-of-concept, running Windows Embedded Standard 7 software, that demonstrates just how powerful and compelling this technology is.
The Intel Digital Signage proof-of-concept is something I would like to show all of you. The only problem is, is that its big – real big. Too big to easily get on and off the stage between the industry addresses today.But we do have the proof-of-concept at the Microsoft booth on the showroom floor. So, why don’t we do the demo on the floor, and show you what this is all about.If we could go to the live camera on the showroom floor, I would like to introduce Ed Stock, Embedded platform architect with Intel.
I would like to shift gears from the focus that Windows Embedded brings to embedded devices in the enterprise and look at the innovation we are bringing to the consumer segment.
I would like to announce, for the very first time, a set of exciting technology that we will be releasing as part of Windows Embedded Standard 7. We believe that connected TV is going to be a great growth area for the embedded industry and we want to provide you with the innovative technology needed to enable a truly great, connected Windows Embedded TV Experience.
We see a key advantage of developing on the Windows Embedded platform as the huge, global community of Windows Embedded partners.
In September at ESC Boston, we officially opened the embeddedSPARK 2010 challenge. The rules were straight forward: do something really, really cool with embedded technology focused on the theme of Fun and Games. Since opening the contest, we’ve had over 1000 users register and received over 120 entries from over 40 countries. And we recently narrowed down that field to the final 3.And those three are here today to compete for the grand prize of $15,000.
