Mike Veny is America’s top guest motivation mental health speaker. His mission is to inspire hope in others through bringing awareness to and transforming the stigma around mental health. Whether the subject is mental illness, behavioral health, emotional health, psychological health, people generally are referring to the same thing (although each of those phrases has a different definition). He believes that Transforming Stigma Into Strength is the key to suicide prevention and stopping the mass shootings that seem to be increasing. Whether it’s anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, a personality disorder, schizophrenia, or trauma, it’s ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL for people to talk about it. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION! In this Powerpoint presentation, Mike Veny discusses The Stigma Cycle: * Stigma starts with shame. * Shame leads to silence. * Silence leads to self-destructive behavior, sabotage, and at it’s worst, suicide. The process repeats and it becomes an endless, downward spiral. He then introduces the concept of Transforming Stigma into Strength: * You transform shame through embracing the confusion mental health challenges bring while taking care of yourself. * You transform silence through keeping the subject of mental health in everyday conversation and your community. * You transform self-destructive behavior, sabotage, and suicidal behavior through consistently looking for teachable moments. This concept has been the foundation of Mike's recovery. After psychiatric hospitalizations, school expulsions as a youth, self harm, and suicide attempts, he discovered that stigma was more painful than his mental illness. In order to reduce the suicide rate and the negative side effects of mental disorders going untreated, it’s important to look at countries like Australia and Canada. They have made incredible progress in transforming stigma. The Canadian Mental Health Association is an innovative organization whose motto is “Mental Health for All.” Mental Health Australia is focused on changing perceptions about mental illness. Mike Veny is a big believer is self advocacy, particularly in the area of mental health. As a mental health speaker at children's events, he hopes to have a positive impact on suicide prevention for youth at risk. Mike is grateful for all the new developments in psychology, psychiatry, and social work to help people like him. He travels around the world and speaks about workplace, minority, elementary school, middle school, high school, college, campus, youth, and children's mental health. Whether it's a conference keynote, forum, workshop, panel, hospital, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Mike is driven to inspire hope in everyone he meets.
