Course Description
Fundamentals of pavement analysis and design; Stresses and strains in flexible pavements; Stresses and
deflections in rigid pavements; Traffic loading and volume; Characterization of pavement materials;
Design of flexible pavements; Design of rigid pavements; Design of overlays; Flexible pavement
rehabilitation; Rigid pavement rehabilitation; Evaluation of pavement performance.
Course Objective
102421 Pavement Design is a fourth-year 3-credit Civil Engineering course aimed at the Civil
Engineering students of AUM. Our goal is to convey specific elementary knowledge about Pavement
Analysis and Design. The Course is intended to teach basic Pavement Design in theoretical manner, and
concepts learned in this course will be put into practice during the relevant laboratory sessions.
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Understand pavement engineering, terminology, and concepts;
2. Understand different types of pavements;
3. Learn and understand the engineering properties and characteristics of pavement materials;
4. Understand the testing and evaluation of soil, granular, and bituminous materials for pavement
analysis and design;
5. Become familiar with Super-pave materials and their asphalt binder tests and requirements;

Course Policies
University regulations apply to this course regarding class attendance, punctuality, exams, late
submissions, absence with permission, penalties for cheating, and policies for assignments and projects,
if any. Students should be aware of all those in addition to other rules and regulations stated and
described in the student handbook.
Once the door of the lecture room has been closed, no student will be allowed in; do not disturb by
knocking on the door. Arriving at the lecture room after the attendance has been taken is equivalent to
absence. Hence, make sure to come to the lecture room 5 minutes in advance, always.
Mobile phones must be switched off during the 75-minute period of lecture. Any mobile phone that rings
or is noticed to be switched on is a sufficient reason to expel its owner from the lecture room.
