NTT has expanded "Home ICT services" nationwide by adopting OSGi technology as software execution platform on NTT's resideintial and office gateways. We can take advantage of this technology to provide not only "connected home services" but remote management services for cusotmers in a flexible way. In this talk we show our objectives and ideas about why we adopted OSGi as platform technology and describe our current usuages. In addition, we introduce our R&D activities regarding OSGi-HGW evaluations with Deutsche Telekom labs.

  • 7. Expand service coverage with open, common APIs ◆ API (Application Programming interface) on HGW should be open, common, andstandardized to enable various service providers to use the platform easily.  OSGi technology meets these requirements. • 8. Reduce the cost for installation of services◆ The cost for installation of services will be reduced when a single shared servicegateway is used instead of separate multiple service control boxes. When providing various functionalities on the single gateway, software modularity is akey point on embedded devices because available resources are limited. OSGi is an excellent software module technology.User Improve convenience Control boxes can be eliminated by installing the (Reduce the number of control corresponding functional software into HGW. boxes at home)3rd Party Reduce service provision cost ×Teleco carrier App UTM-BOX Expand sale × opportunities OSGi-PF HGW HEMS-BOX × UTM:【Unified Threat Management】 HEMS:【Home Energy Management System】 Win&Win&Win Home appliance Page 8 OSGi Alliance Community Event 2011© 2008-2011. • 9. Reduce the cost for application development Service providers have to create different application software for the differentvendors’ HGWs unless a common application platform is available.  Common application platform is effective to reduce the cost. Java virtual machine is suitable for this platform since it can conceal the differencesin operating systems. OSGi platform provides modularity for Java. 【Without a common AP-PF】 【With a common AP-PF (OSGi-PF)】 Service Provider Service Provider Common app Common app Common appApp soft App soft OSGi-PF OSGi-PF OSGi-PF App soft HGW HGW HGW HGW HGW HGWApp softVendor A Vendor B Vendor C Vendor A Vendor B Vendor C Page 9 OSGi Alliance Community Event 2011© 2008-2011.
