Let’s walk through the ADKAR Model using a
sample scenario.
Reinforcement
Suppose you are the head of your family and
you’ve decided it’s time to move to a new
home. What steps will you take to ensure the
change goes well for you and your family?

2. The ADKAR Model
Awareness
Understanding the “WHY” of a change
Your first steps is to establish for your family an understanding of the
“WHY” the change is needed. Perhaps your work situation has changed for
the better. A new baby may be on the way. Market conditions are
favorable. Everyone agrees that the current house is not the right size.
As the head of the family, you will need to consider how the members of
the family are going to receive your message. Organize your thoughts and
then explain in easy to understand terms things like:
• The nature of the change.
• Why the change is needed.
• The risk of not changing.
2
3. The ADKAR Model
Desire
A person’s personal decision to support the
change or not.
Next, you will need to make the change palatable and use a little individual
consideration to get those affected by the change to offer their support.
• Explain What’s in it for each person in the family (WIIFM)?
• Make yourself available to answer questions to make sure others view the
change as positive.
• Do your best to engage everyone in the change and secure their
participation in the change.

4. The ADKAR Model
Knowledge
Knowing how to change
Once the decision to move to a new home is made, you’ll need to make
sure everyone who is participating feels secure about their part in making
the change successful.
• Understand how to individually make the change
• Learning new routes to get to work, school, and home
• Learning new things about the new home such as maintenance

5. The ADKAR Model
Ability
The new action in the right direction
Heading down the street to your new home might be easier than you think
if you think ahead and organize your approach to change. You’ll know this
is accomplished when you notice your family getting excited about the
change and telling others. You will have helped them to feel ABLE to
change and maybe even happy about it too.

6. The ADKAR Model
Reinforcement
Steps to reinforce and sustain the change
And finally, as the head of the family and initiator of the decision to move
to a new home, your constant positive reinforcement means a lot.
Demonstrate the behaviors and attitudes you want – Model the way.
Recognize and reward the family for a change well-implemented that has
left everyone feeling good. Doing this will set the stage for success the next
time a change must be managed.

7. The ADKAR Model
So there you have it! The ADKAR Model of change management and a
good scenario to demonstrate it. In what way will you use the ADKAR
Model to navigate your next change?
