This document analyzes 9 different shot types from the horror film "The Evil Dead" and how they could be used in a film trailer. It describes each shot, including the type of shot, why it was used, its function, when it would appear, and how the information could be applied to making a film trailer. The shots establish settings, characters, story elements, tension, and horror through techniques like close-ups, establishing shots, typography, and revealing scary creatures. Taken together, the shots are meant to represent the horror genre and scare the audience from the beginning to the end of the trailer.
3. Shot 1:
TYPE OF SHOT? This shot is of the production logos which are the companies used to
produce the film.
WHY? These are used to give the audience information on who produced the film so
that they will recognise it as a good film.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The well known production companies will make the
audience want to see the film as they are familiar with the company and therefore
will trust it.
WHEN? This is used at the beginning of the film so that it is the first thing that the
audience notice about the film before they know what happens in it.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I will use this shot in my trailer so that the audience has trust in
the film and it makes it look far more professional.
4. Shot 2:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is an establishing shot revealing the woods and the cabin in which
the film is set.
WHY? This shot is used to establish the setting of the film and tell the audience where
it is going to be set.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The fact that it is an isolated setting which is common in
horror films makes the audience realise that something bad is going to happen and
the characters are going to have no hope of being saved.
WHEN? This is used at the very beginning of the trailer to straight away tell the
audience the setting of the film.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I will use this shot in my film trailer so that I can show the
audience easily, where the film is set.
5. Shot 3:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is a close up of the ‘book’ in the film reading ‘LEAVE THIS BOOK
ALONE’
WHY? This is used to establish events of the film as well as the genre which is horror.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The purpose of this is to make the audience realise that this
may be an important prop within the film and the fact that we know it’s a horror
film means that this may be the ‘killer’ or the thing which involves the killer.
WHEN? This is shown towards the middle of the trailer to quickly tell the audience
what the genre is as well as giving them some of the storyline.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I could possibly use this type of shot in my film trailer to explain
the story line to the audience. This is a good way of explaining the story through
text but not typography.
6. Shot 4:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is shot from ‘inside the hole’ revealing a girl falling into the hole.
WHY? This is used to establish the setting being a isolated woods as well as
establishing character, a young girl and events that something bad is going to
happen to this girl as she has fallen into the ‘scary’ hole.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The fact that the camera is angled from the inside of the
hole, looking out makes the audience feel trapped and confined which makes the
trailer and film much more scarier as it puts the audience in the setting.
WHEN? This is towards the middle of the trailer. It is shown here to build suspense for
the audience.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I could maybe use a shot similar to this in my film trailer so that I
can make my audience feel a certain way making them more scared which is the
main purpose of horror.
7. Shot 5:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is a close up shot of two characters in the film with the woman saying
something to the man about the storyline, very close to his face.
WHY? This shot is used to establish the characters, the man and the ‘evil/possessed’ woman and
it is also used to establish the storyline through what she is saying to him.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The function of this shot is to put the audience in the mans ‘shoes’ and
make them feel scared for him but to also explain to the audience a basic storyline.
WHEN? This is shown towards the middle of the trailer to build tension as well as creating a
storyline for the audience before the trailer becomes too horrifying.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I will use this shot in my trailer as I think that the fact that you cannot see all
of there faces is quite effective as it is focusing on what she is saying rather than everything
else. This again makes the audience feel confined which is very useful in horror films.
8. Shot 6:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is typography with a simple black background with the word
‘FEAR’ in sharp, white lettering.
WHY? The use of colours here makes the audience focus on the word rather than
anything else because it is the only thing in the shot.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The word ‘fear’ is a word which is related to horror and it
tells the audience how to feel which is scared. This is the main thing that horror
films are for, to scare people, and therefore, this is a good way of explaining it to
them.
WHEN? This is used in the middle of the trailer, towards the end, so that the audience
are able to understand how they are supposed to be feeling.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I could possibly use this type of shot in my trailer either to tell the
audience how they should feel or to explain the storyline.
9. Shot 7:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is a high angle shot showing the flickering light bulb in focus and the
character out of focus, turning on the light in the background.
WHY? A flickering light bulb is a very typical icon in horror films and is widely recognised and
because this is all that is in focus makes it seem much more daunting . The fact that this is
used will further represent the genre to the audience.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The function of this is to establish the genre which is horror through
the very obvious icon which has been used in may other horror films in the past.
WHEN? This is used towards the end of the trailer and goes with the rest of the shots used to
build tension and suspense.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I could possibly use this shot in my film as it is a good way of making the
audience focus on something that you need them to focus on so that you can represent the
genre better.
10. Shot 8:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is a close up of one of the characters in a car, screaming as she
sees the ‘killer’ on the road in front of her.
WHY? This shot shows that the woman is scared of the killer which represents the
genre and the character in the trailer.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The purpose of this is so that the audience can see that the
woman is scared through her facial expressions which also makes them feel
scared.
WHEN? This is used towards the very end of the trailer so that the genre is finalised
and it leaves the audience wandering what happens to her.
HOW WILL I USE IT? I could possibly use this type of shot in my trailer so that the
audience are able to feel scared for the character as well as making them feel
scared as well.
11. Shot 9:
TYPE OF SHOT? This is a close up of the ‘possessed’ creature coming out of the
floorboards.
WHY? This is used to establish the genre of the film being horror as she looks like a
very scary character because of the facial expression and the way that she doesn’t
look human.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION? The function of this is to make the audience feel scared right
up to the last point of the trailer as this is something which you do not see in
everyday life and therefore it is seen as something frightening.
WHEN? This is used at the very end of the trailer to give a final representation of
horror.
