The Castle of Arteaga is located near Guernica in the fertile Urdaibai estuary region. The original eighth century manor house on the site was destroyed and rebuilt many times before the current castle was built in the mid-fifteenth century. By the nineteenth century, the castle had fallen into disrepair and was used as a farmhouse.
