5. What is Sustainability?
sus·tain·a·bil·i·ty noun
1. the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or
confirmed.
2. Environmental Science. the quality of not being
harmful to the environment or depleting natural
resources, and thereby supporting long-term
ecological balance: The committee is developing
sustainability standards for products that use
energy.
At the Wentworth Point Discovery Centre we hope
to engage sustainability throughout our buildings
and development.

6. How do we be Sustainable?
Using recycled, renewable and reusable products
to ensure that it is environmentally friendly
Using solar panels so that we are restoring a
natural area and atmosphere
Using water tanks to reuse water for things like
flushing toilets and watering the garden.
Using a compost bins to reuse waste for fertilising
Using energy efficient appliances
Using things like sloped roofing shoots to catch
water
Being energy, water, waste and travel efficient
(saving energy, saving water, reducing waste)

7. Why are we Sustainable?
So that we can make sure that the buildings last longer in an area
that has minimal impact on the environment. The Wentworth Point
area needs to be able to life as long as the people in it for many
generations; this is why we need it to be extremely sustainable to
things like weather conditions, vandalism and age.
As well as these, the industrial areas need to be having little effect
on the natural environment to prevent the damage of our wildlife;
and to increase the sustainability of the new community. By using
things like recycled materials, we are creating less damage on the
environment.
Products that can be recycled, renewable and reused are better in
the long term. Also, by reducing waste, water consumption, and
being energy efficient; you can protect the ecosystems from falling
by containing our impact on the earth.

9. Saving Energy
By saving energy not only do we save money, but we are
being more environmentally friendly in participating in
programs such as using solar panels or wind power, turning
off appliances and not using unnecessary electricity. The
new community of Wentworth Point will enforce these kinds
of rules as to ensure that it is improving the sustainability.
By using solar panels/wind power in the city, we are making
sure that the environment is protected from the burning of
fossil fuels to make energy. It also helps to save money for
the user in their power bill. And by turning off appliances
from the power switch, we are saving electricity and not
using unnecessary power. This all leads to the long term
sustainability for energy in Wentworth Point.

10. Saving Water
In saving water through procedures such as: using rain water tanks, using
water efficient appliances and fixtures, choosing the correct plants, reusing
water. Reusing water is a great way to save water. You can reuse by having
rainwater tanks/hot water tanks; and filtering water to be used on the garden,
in the bathroom or pool. Also by using water efficient appliances and fixtures
(and checking their rating stars) you can save money and a lot of water with
smart products.
Reducing the average 5.5-12L per flush to 3L per flush by choosing a 5 star
toilet (maximum stars). By choosing the correct plants for your garden (i.e.
suited to your local soil and weather conditions), you can save water as only
the amount needed for the right conditions is used. Not extra for plants that
require more.

11. Reducing Waste
To reduce waste a city must: reduce, reuse, recycle, compost, use
a hazardous waste collection facility, buy reused and recycled
products, and disposing of waste properly. To dispose of hazardous
waste, organic waste, electronic or ewaste, building materials
properly you must follow guidelines and drop of certain materials at
collection depots.
If Wentworth Point participated in contributing to recycling of these
materials correctly, there would be reduced waste in the city. What
can also reduce waste is to compost (another way of recycling
organic waste). Also, by buying reused and recycled products (e.g.
doormats made from tyres, and jewellery made from antique glass,
old typewriter keys, circuit boards and even skateboards) we can
help to continue to reduce the waste in the new community. To
truly understand the meanings of the words recycle look below:
