There are economical alternatives to a complete T5 lighting retrofit. Legend Power's smart transformer, the Harmonizer AVR. reduces voltage at a building's power source, making T8 bulbs more efficient.

Energy Conservation, Sustainability and Lighting experts in the North American Retail industry are becoming increasingly vocal with
their concerns about the true economics of T5s and lower life active ballast systems in all their stores.
Hidden costs include:

• Newly developed prolonged-life T8 lamps have lives of 4,000 or 10,000 hours longer than T5 lamps

• T5s are only around 9% more efficient than T8’s (T8 is 40% more efficient than T12. T5 is 51% more efficient than T12)

• T5 ballasts run 10 degrees hotter than T8 ballasts and require more frequent service and replacement
When taken together, these hidden costs significantly increased long term replacement, labour, disposal and interrupted retail
opportunity costs and drive up the real payback period for this type of lighting retrofit far beyond the surface numbers that are
commonly presented.
A sound strategy that minimizes cost, uses much of the existing infrastructure and maximizes facility wide efficiency gains, is to
utilize facility level Voltage Optimization with recently developed Automatic Voltage Regulation technology (trade name -
Harmonizer-AVR) with a T8 lighting system employing passive front-end electronic ballasts (see attached). The benefits include:

Up until today, no real technological solution existed that would safely and economically solve the problem of overvoltage to
facilities (which any engineer will tell you is the primary culprit that shortens the life cycle of lamps, electrical fixtures with passive
ballasts and non-variable speed motors)... without chancing a brownout situation.
Today, in instances where plug level voltage in a facility is at 119v or more, just by installing the Harmonizer-AVR system, retailers
are able to ensure that only the amount of power they require to operate their stores and facilities is allowed to enter their
buildings, and not any extra. By paying only for what they need and not what is force fed by the utilities, this delta represents the

We believe that building owners and designers looking for energy savings in fluorescent applications should first consider the
Harmonizer-AVR in conjunction with the newer 28 watt T8 lamps, more efficient ballasts. T5 lamping and fixtures may be a modern
option, but in our experience, there are more cost effective solutions in today’s market.3
