  • 5. Reading Macmillan/McGraw Hill Treasures New theme each week 60% non-fiction, 40% fiction Shared reading to model reading strategies and skills Leveled books for guided reading
  • 6. Reading Independent reading to reinforce strategies and skills End of unit assessments Grammar taught with writer’s workshop and focused skills in each unit
  • 7. Writer’s Workshop Focused corrections Modeling from author’s works Graphic organizers Conferencing
  • 8. Spelling Each week will focus on new phonetic rule Alternative list will begin after first six weeks Spelling homework Tests will be on Fridays
  • 9. Cursive Handwriting Zaner-Bloser program Lower case letters first, then upper case Graded on cursive with April report card
  • 10. Math Everyday Mathematics Program Topics: Addition and Subtraction of whole numbers, measurement, multiplication and division, place value and decimals, geometry, fractions, probability Timed facts tests (3 rd graders are expected to complete 20 problems in one minute.) End of unit assessments will be sent home to be signed and returned to school
  • 11. Social Studies Geography of Massachusetts Pilgrims and Plimoth Colony Puritans and Massachusetts Bay Colony American Revolution
  • 12. Science Simple Machines Rocks and Minerals Moon Plants
  • 13. Student Responsibilities Bring the red folder and agenda back and forth from home to school everyday Complete written homework 3 times a week Read for at least 20 minutes each night Practice math facts on a regular basis
