2. Cause Caribbean wanting independence from Spain (February 1895) U.S. citizens demanded for intervention after “yellow journalists” were publishing newspaper articles about the rebellion. USS Maine was destroyed February 15, 1898, in Havana Harbor, believed that it was bombed, resulting in the final push to become involved. (proved wrong decades later)
3. Events Spain declared war on the U.S. on April 24th 1898, U.S declared war on Spain on April 25th Pathetically one sided war: Spain declared a war they were unprepared for May 1st a naval squadron led by George Deweydestroyed the anchored Spanish fleet in a leisurely morning engagement that resulted in only seven American seamen wounded. Late June the elusive fleet led by Adm. PascualCervera was located by U.S reconnaissance and an army of fleets led by Theodore Roosevlt and his 1stvolenteercalvery the “Rough Riders”pushed him out to sea to be put under heavy American captured on July 17, effectively ending the war.
4. Resolution Although the fighting ended on July 17th the whole situation wasn’t resolved until the signing of The Treaty of Paris on Dec 10th Spain renounced all claim of Puerto Rico, Guam and Cuba to the U.S and transferred ownership of the Philippines to the U.S for $20mill
5. Aftermath Receded back into Spain, caring more about themselves then the search for the “new found land” Resulted in an economic boom
