Editor's Notes
Elderly populationis increasing in numbers and will soon become the majority. Heise, Johnsen, Himes, & Wing (2012) stated that everyday 10,000 people turns 65 years old, and this number will only continue to grow. This population will also be seeking the most healthcare so it imperative that we learn how to delivery care.
Delivery of Care is different from other age groups. Standard of care maybe different as you would not treat a 75 yr. old like you would a 25yr old. Various age groups are functioning at various stage of development and have different issues and concerns. Issues for the elderly could include depression, social isolation, fear of death, fear of dependence, and debilitating health conditions.Issues for other generations such as Generation Y can include social conformity, acceptance, and job obtainment.
Depression in the Elderly is a growing concern. This video/story telling will give you some perspective on this growing problem.
Spirituality encompasses more than an appreciation for religious values.Spiritual practices can involve prayer, meditation, yoga, quiet contemplation, or any other relaxation that helps you slow down and connect with the essence of who you are and what you value in life. It can also be an effective way to fight stress and help you cope with health conditions. Providing spiritual practices with preferences specific to each individual is important. For the elderly who maybe in the inpatient setting, assessing spiritual needs is important and should be continued as appropriate when providing care. For the elderly who may reside in residential communities or at home, spiritual needs should be assessed and activities should be provided to ensure these needs are met.
This video is a report by ABC on the prevalence of falls on the elderly. I included the use of this YouTube video because I think that this video can convey more than words can about the importance of fall prevention. Also video enhances and allows for creativity in the learning environment. It should be noted that falls can be related altered physical mobility and side effects of medications.
Talking points to cover 1. Provider lack of knowledge and approach to the geriatric populationMost practicing nurses have limited preparation to care for elders in any setting: long-term, acute care, community, or rehabilitation. According to Kovner et al., 2002, only 4% of all nursing programs met the requirements for providing excellent geriatric education.2. Generational differences between care giver and patient There is a disconnect between generation. Baby boomers are characterized as workaholics, independent, goal oriented , competitive, strive for personal development ,nonconformists and believe they have the ability to impact change. So imagine telling a baby boomer when to take the medications and when to go to sleep. They are often independent and desire to maintain control and their independence.Generation Y are characterized as team oriented , cooperative, socially networked , confident , assertive, and realistic interpretation of their world. There is clearly a distinct difference between the two generations. There it is important that caregivers or providers are aware of the characteristic of the patients so that they can provide care more effectively.
Thought would be a good idea to incorporate into presentation because word search is used for the Geriatric population to provide mental stimulation. Many aging Americans go without any social or physical interaction and experience isolation. This isolation leads to lost of mental stimulation which can accelerate many conditions such as dementia. Encouraging the elderly to play stimulating games such as word search and cross word puzzles can keep their mind engage.
