Hello and welcome to Keith Floyd’s new Online Presentation. I am Simpson the Labrador and you may have already seen me on Keith’s blog or a discussion board. Keith is my human dad but he can’t really publish his photo online because of his job. Representing him online became one of my jobs after Keith read that silhouette profile pictures look bad. Keith retires soon but he is looking for a new job to pay for my insurance and dog food, apparently it’s very expensive. He has just completed the University of Leicester ONE Award to help him get the right job so I’ll hand over to Keith now to present his PowerPoint. Enjoy. I’m off to look for a bone…
Thank you Simpson. I’m Keith Floyd and welcome to my online presentation.
It will only take 5 minutes and in that time I will tell you a little about my PERSONAL BRAND and how I have been learning new skills by undertaking the UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER Online Networking and Employability (AKA the ONE) Award!
I will be reflecting on how completing the award has allowed me to plan exactly how I will market myself online as I make preparations for my new career as a university lecturer next year. I must admit if taking a course is about learning; the ONE Award has been a very successful course. It has been one of those experiences which has been almost scary because I didn’t know what I didn’t know! In the next few minutes I hope to reflect on how the One Award has helped me develop some exciting new skills!
Slide 2 and here’s the RULE of THREE already!
There are 3 parts to the ONE Award and I’m going to explain during this presentation how they will help me to realise my career aspirations.
Apologies for the wordy slide, I broke the golden PowerPoint rule but a personal brand is a personal brand…so I did need to read it verbatim.
Personal Brand was explained on the ONE Award as being like a USP… a Unique Selling Point … just like on the The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den!
When considering what my personal brand should be I reflected on feedback received from the Unit 1 assessment. I am currently awaiting peer feedback from my recently published blog and online CV.
I also reflected on inputs from a recent pre-retirement course and feedback from recently retired former colleagues. The consensus was police officers often undervalue the depth of transferable skills they possess. I feel I have countered that by considering mine in my CV and beginning to augment the currency of my qualifications by studying part-time for an MSc in Criminology, specialising in Police Leadership and Management, and by completing a preliminary teaching qualification, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training. I have also secured the opportunity of as many hours teaching practice at my local university and in my force’s training department as I need.
I’m sorry I can’t publish pictures or reveal too much personal information because of some of the things I am involved in at work. It could compromise my safety, that of my family and could compromise police work I am involved in.
I retire in August so security will lighten up then.
In the meantime I have updated my Linkedin profile. There is a link in the pages at the bottom of my blog.
I have Facebook and Twitter accounts but they are currently for leisure purposes only, access mainly for friends and family and my security settings are high. Post-retirement I will open these up to increase my online footprint.
I thought I was pretty IT and Internet savvy but I have discovered many new professional and presentation sites during the ONE Award. I imagine that I am still only just scraping the surface so I will – when work and studying for my MSc permit – be exploring some of these. I have plumped for trusty old PowerPoint and Windows Movie Maker for my first online presentation.
My understanding of an effective online presence is maximising the use of social media to publicise oneself and one’s personal brand, thereby presenting information to new professional contacts and potential employers.
The ONE Award has introduced me to many new sites offering excellent free tools to make networking easier such as … Hootsuite, Pinterest, Feedly and Klout. I am looking forward to using these and have them saved in my favourites on my laptop. I have also downloaded apps on my phone so I can update everything anytime and anywhere, taking heed of the advice that it is vital to constantly refresh my online content to raise my visibility and Klout score.
4. The biggest problem I face is having an internationally famous chef as a namesake. Although the famous Keith Floyd has sadly passed away now he occupies pages and pages of Google pages so I need to work out a way of worming my way up to the top of his pages.
BEFORE completing the ONE Award my future career plans were quite parochial. I was restricting my ambitions to finding a job at the local university. Whilst that might turn out to be the best job for me there and no guarantees the right vacancy would come at the right time.
AFTER Completing the ONE Award, in particular receiving positive feedback from tutors and peers in discussions boards, I have broadened my horizons now the award has provided me with the tools I need to enhance my career prospects on a much wider scale. I will continue to develop my online presence by using social media in the smartest way possible.
FUTURE From August I will review my security restrictions on all my social media. I am looking forward to being able to publish photos and video of myself and my work but the current restrictions on my private life won’t be detrimental as I won’t be looking for work in earnest until Spring 2015. By then I should be an online social media ninja!
Thanks for listening. I hope you can spend a little time now reading my blog, links and Linkedin profile.
Goodbye from me and Goodbye from Simpson, he’s had to get ready to go out as we have just heard his step-brother Pringle the Poodle arrive with his chauffeur in his sports car!
Please take a minute to make a note of my contact details on the next slide and thank you for taking the time to listen to my presentation. Please get in touch if there is anything I can help you with. Take Care, Keith.
