Middle Childhood and Adolescence Paper PSY/280 During childhood and throughout adolescences changes can occur that can either positively or negatively affect the youth and future relationships, as well as how the develop. A good example of this is children that are born to teen mothers. The mother has not fully developed and is not able to make tough life choices without a negative impact. Furthermore, the teen mom is influenced not by other adults but other teens that are her peers. This greatly affects her newborn child as they look to the mom for advice when she is getting it from the wrong places. Changes that happen at school and home affect the child because how they handle situations when young will determine how they cope with adult decisions that they need to make. In terms of family there is a huge gap when looking at a dysfunctional family versus how a functional family works. The idealistic functional family has the parent as the leaders, and they are in place to raise the children and keep them on a promising belief system. On the opposite end of the spectrum a dysfunctional family does not have parents as leaders leaving the kids the fend for themselves and they have to pull emotions from each other and strangers. They grow up thinking that absenteeism is ok as a parent. When a parental figure is not active in a child’s life, they learn the wrong traits and values that they receive from their peers. The most common traits of a dysfunctional family are signs of abuse, kids hat always want to be perfect, lack of communication, addiction fear and the need to be in control. The underlying factor of this is children that grow up in this type of environment not only harbor these bad traits but the pass them on to their children think it is ok and the 0process continues. Also, various forms of anxiety form, social anxiety is one that prevents interaction between persons because one or both are worried about what the other will think about them. Relationship anxiety directly affects how a child handles different relationships, is there is anxiety in relationships when a child is young there is a real chance the child will not know how to handle adult relationships. The difference in how a child handles relationship is greatly determined by if they grow up in a dysfunctional family or if they are able to have full family functions. One of the advantages of having a functional family is when there are peer issues and peer pressure is involved there is a better chance that the child will be able to mentally handle what is happening and make better informed decisions. Adversely a child that grows up in a dysfunctional family will accept the unhealthy relationships and give in to peer pressure. When in the teen stage peer pressure becomes a huge part of life. To ease the transition from teen to adult and help combat some of the negative peer pressure out there it is important the teen have some positive family members .

The parent-child relationship is the most important relationship in an individual’s life. In order to understand the relationship between children and their parents, it is vital to look at the ways that they interact with each other emotionally, physically and socially. All people think of establishing good relationships with their children and would like to know what an ideal parent-child relationship would be like. There are different imaginations of various kinds of effects that a good or a poor relationship would bring. Therefore the significance of the attachment that the children have with their parents is that it could possibly influence the kind of decisions that the adolescent would make. Violence can at times be as a result of exposure to violent behavior. According to the center for disease control (2015), the third leading cause of death in the world for young people at the age of fifteen to twenty-four years is youth violence. The relationship between children and their parents play a crucial role in shaping a person’s approach to the world as well as the determination of who they become in the future. Psychologists believe that children whose basic needs are adequately met by their parents usually grow into trusting adults unlike those whose needs were not met hence developing feelings of mistrust. When children feel secure in the presence of their parents, they normally become adaptive and adjust properly to the environment and are able to avoid stress in their childhood. On the other hand, the unavailable rejecting and the unresponsive parents make the children repel and become self-reliant. The situation is brought about by the fact that they experience their parents as unresponsive and end up becoming insecurely attached to them. The adolescents then develop the character of being dependent as they are not certain of their parent's support. The purpose of this research is to explore the attachment and the bond between parents and their children, and how the children are affected when a disconnection occurs in the family setting. There are various reports that major on the parent and child relationship especially revolving around the deviant behavior by adolescence. According to Best et al. (2016), a program should be developed for educating parents on how to establish a good relationship with their adolescent children. In his report, he discusses various findings of past research mostly focusing on the adolescent relationship with their parents. It is a fanfic musical production about the stepmothers of Disney princesses. It is quite a mockery for the self-pitying but in fact cruel upbringing of the young girls. It is fictional and the stepmothers don’t love their stepdaughters necessarily, but we have to reflect on it: when we are parents, what are the best method to be taken so that our children can be responsible and positive grownups. Authoritarian or authoritative? It is a hot topic that never grows old; every parent has their reason to act upon. Experiencing quite a mix of harsh and lenient ways in my childhood, I find authoritative one more favorable. In the following paragraphs, I will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of both parenting styles. Positive authoritative are defined as parents to be instructive and highly responsive to the development of child growth (Baumrind, 1966); On the contrary, authoritarian is control over most aspects of children’s lives, to make sure they stay on track (Kuppens & Ceulemans, 2019). There are pros and cons to both sides. As of authoritarian, the most important outcome is the high academic performances. Authoritarian parents put a lot of effort into student’s schoolwork and extracurricular activities, such as playing piano or violin. They closely follow children’s daily routine, make sure every minute will not go wasted. They want every investment to give harvests. They take their children to all kinds of competitions, and win loads of certificates to quantify how successful and extraordinary the child is. They see children as another form of themselves, impose their dreams on children. Indeed, children who have worked all day, with all kinds of championships and scholarships could end up in ivy league and possibly win a prestigious job when graduated. It seems they have lived a life everyone desires and so it satisfies the parents. However, it is not the most favorable approach in academia, and there are a lot of downsides to it. First, it restrains the possibility of cultivating comprehensive personalities. Children become obedient to their parents, they cannot communicate well with their peers, their only profound relationship are with their parents throughout their lives, and it is no sign of a fully grown man. I personally have seen too much of a case. People who grow up under the shadow of their parents tend to be indecisive and too dependent on their parents. It is the consequence of psychological control of the authoritarian parenting. Whenever they speak of their mind, they got turned down or shouted back. Then they don’t speak much about themselves with self-centered parents, who think they are doing the best for kids. Socialization is the process by which people learn characteristics of their group’s norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors. Through socialization we learn the culture of the society into which we have been born. In the course of this process, a personality develops. A personality is comprised of patterns of behavior and ways of thinking and feeling that are distinctive for each individual. Babies are not born with the social or emotional tools needed to contribute to society as properly functioning social actors. They have to learn all the nuances of proper behavior, how to meet expectations for what is expected of them, and everything else needed to become members of society. As newborns interact with family and friends they learn the expectations of their society (family, community, state, and nation). From the first moments of life, children begin a process of socialization wherein parents, family, and friends establish an infant’s social construction of reality, or what people define as real because of their background assumptions and life experiences with others. An average U.S. child’s social construction of reality includes knowledge that he or she belongs, and can depend on others to meet his or her needs. It also includes the privileges and obligations that accompany membership in his or her family and community. In a typical set of social circumstances, children grow up through a predictable set of life stages: infancy, preschool, K-12 school years, young adulthood, adulthood, middle adulthood, and finally later-life adulthood. Most will leave home as young adults, find a spouse or life partner in their mid-to late 20s and work in a job for pay. 2 | S o c i a l i z a t i o n THREE LEVELS OF SOCIALIZATION When discussing the average U.S. child, most agree that the most imperative socialization takes place early in life and in identifiable levels. Primary socialization typically begins at birth and moves forward until the beginning of the school years. Primary socialization includes all the ways the newborn is molded into a social being capable of interacting in and meeting the expectations of society. Most primary socialization is facilitated by the family, friends, day care, and to a certain degree various forms of media. Children watch about three hours of TV per day (by the time the average child attends kindergarten she has watched about 5,000 hours of TV.

This paper intends to address this concern, bring attention to its presence shown in families across America, and discuss techniques on how to promote healthy change in the lives of a family using its external and internal developmental assets to enrich specific elements of the human experience. Statement of the Problem For reasons that significantly vary in nature and are difficult to verify, American families are not following a healthy design. YMCA of the USA polled 1,005 parents from across the United States, investigating how much support and success they experience in raising healthy, responsible, and caring children and teenagers. Among those surveyed, 46 percent feel overwhelmed by everything, 34 percent feel unsupported by family or friends, and a staggering 52 percent feel that they are unprepared for a situation that arises, overall feeling dissatisfied with their parenting. To further dismay, in the same study, a majority (53 percent) of parents surveyed said they don’t often seek support in the vital and challenging task of raising children and teenagers. This devastating combination of dissatisfactory parenting and inability to seek help lands American.
