Falster Pure Bred Miniature
Hereford Heifers - 2013
The following presentation exhibits a group of heifers that were brought into the
corrals on 1 AUG 13. Current availability is subject to prior sale. These are only a few
of the heifers we have available. They represent a good cross section of our 5 herd.
All have been pastured exposed to the Pure Bred miniature Hereford herd sire
indicated in their respective notes.
In order to break a condition instilled by damns of unsatisfactory disposition, two
presented here have been reared on a bottle and then given to a gentle surrogate
mama,. They proved themselves worthy to carry the Falster brand of miniature
Hereford seed stock.
2. Falster’s selection process begins at birth:
Every once in awhile, for whatever reason (maybe traits skipping a
generation), you’ll have a calf that proves out wrong, but mainly we
have a pretty good idea about which heifer calves will make
replacements or foundation stock, shortly after they are born. The notes
section provided with these slides indicate points used to help in our
earliest decision process; at birth, at weaning, and at branding is
another opportunity to double check how they are coming along, if our
standards are met, if our breeding plan is working.
We usually don’t have very many surprises when it comes to weaning
time. We go back on the cow records several generations — to the
granddame or even farther, so we are looking at the pedigree both top
and bottom on the registered cattle we sell. No, we do not sell culls.
Every competent breeder has his/her own specific goals in selecting
female replacements, and these goals often vary a little depending on
the ranch environment, priorities for cow herd traits, and what the
customers purchasing seed stock out of that herd might want. In the
miniature cattle world it’s especially important for a producer to set
breeding program goals and select females to meet those goals just like
the Falster family does each year.
Even if the buyer is seeking a pet, program breeding and a selection
process can offer the very best possibility of satisfaction and success.
Falster genetics offers that quality.
