THE KALACHURI KINGS.
PANCHANGA SUMMARY
6. AARIDRA (ARDRA) NAKSHATRA
It is time now to seriously
ponder over the socio-cul-
tural and economic problems
that our samaj faces today.
The changing socio-cultural
scenario demands that the
problems have to be redressed
collectively. India is a vast land
and the social problems faced
by our larger community vary
from region to region. So, we
call upon our intellectuals to
make an in-depth analysis of
the vital problems bogging us
relating especially to marriage
and employment.
Kids in the metropoli-
tan cities and big towns now
consider the web as their
secret resource for every thing
they want to know about sex
and sexuality including dirty
pictures and movies. Web is
a world where sex is treated
as just another commodity
where access is round-the-
clock with no censorship.
Unless the parents are careful,
it can colour a child’s attitude
towards sex and relation-
ships. It dehumanizes. Parents
alone can best understand the
sensitivity of their child and
explain things about sexuality
accordingly. Such explana-
tions can help children maintain
proper perspective and not get
carried away by the informa-
tions of the web.
An Indian wedding has
become a complex affair,
challenging and overwhelming.
Parents just don’t have the time
to plan dream weddings for their
kids. Wedding planning has
become all the more important
and a serious need. It involves
an immense responsibility and
vision.
The parents of the mar-
riageable sons and daughters
should exercise due care and
precautions and watch their
activities. This will prevent the
youths going astray. Mothers
should act as good guides
and friends to their daughters
while the fathers should take
into confidence their male
children in matters relating to
marriage affairs. The Intercaste
marriages have been throwing
emotional challenges and any
attempts on our part to snub
them through unlawful methods
won’t auger well. So, timely act
and due care and precaution
alone is a good remedy.
In some parts of the country,
the SSK Samaj girls are better
educated than the boys and
this too is a major contributory
factor for the growing number of
intercaste marriages. Whether
good or bad, the intercaste
marriages will segregate the
individuals from the community
relationships and that leads on
to unhappiness.
We appeal to our leaders
and intellectuals to send their
opinions and suggestions to
remedy such vital problems
bogging our community. A sort
of loud-thinking is necessary to
guide our people.
This month we have begun
a column for career and
vocational counseling. We have
been insisting upon our leaders
and teachers and social activists
to evince special interest and
initiation in guiding our youths in
their career-seeking efforts. The
career-counseling programmes
should be undertaken and
executed in all the cities and
towns. Along with the religious
performances and programmes,
the social activities aiming at
awareness-drive should be
given due priority.
We look forward to readers’
responses and the worthy
articles will be published in this
paper.

he Kalchurs too were the Chalukyas
and so they are called as Kalchuri
Chalukyas. The Kalchuris according
to some historians were the migrants from
Madhyapradesh and some historians say
that these people had first migrated to
Madhyapradesh and after a gap of time
returned to Karnataka. The Kalachuri
Inscriptions say that the Kalchuri rulers
belonged to the Chedi lineage and were the
descendants of the Chedi kings. Shishupal
of the Mahabharatha king is said to be a
Chedi ruler. The Kalachuris were the rulers
(samant rulers) who owed allegiance to the
Kalyani Chalukyas. Their original capital
was Mangalavede near sholapur. It is said
that Uchita, the ancestor had come to
Mangalavede and made it his capital and
ruled his kingdom from there. The Kalchuri
kings are also called as Haihaya Kings.
The Kalchuri Haihaya kings belong to the
family of Sree Somavamsha Sahasrarjuna
Kshatrya. Sree Sahasrarjuna Maharaja
was also called Haihaya emperor. Thus, the
Kalchuri chalukyas were the descendents of
the family of Sree Sahasrarjuna.
After the rule of King Uchita, Jogaman,
Permadi, Bijjal the First ruled the kingdom
and Mangalavede was their capital. We
can now see many families of the SSK in
Sholapur and Kolhapur and its surroundings.
Mangalavede is in between Sholapur and
Kolhapur. Some families of SSK in Sholapur
are called Kolhapure as they migrated to
Sholapur from Kolhapur and its surround-
ings. The famous temples of Mahalaxmi
(Sree Karaveer Nivasini), Yamaiee, Eka
Veeradevi, in Kolhapur were built by the
Kalyani Chalukyas. The second Bijjal
of twelfth century belonging to the
lineology of Haihaya was a blood-
relation of the Chalukya rulers.
When the Chalukya king had
become weak, Bijjal declared
himself as a free king and
began his rule making Kalyani
as his Capital.
Bijjal adored the Shaiva
Dharma and worshipped Sree
Revana Siddeshwara as his aaradya
Daiva. We find hundreds of
SSK families in these areas.
The SSK families known by
the surnames Siddling, Rajoli, Raibagi and
Arasiddi worship Sree Revana Siddeshwara
as their kula-devata. The SSK migrants
from Raibag are called Raibagis. They
worship Revana Siddeshwara and during
Shravanamasa they perform puja in the
Revana Siddeshwara temple that is situated
near Raibag.
King Bijjala loved and adored the Shaiva
Dharma and took measures to popularize it.
Therefore, he invited Basavanna and made
him the chief minister of his kingdom. This
eventually led to the great religious revolu-
tion of the twelfth century known as revo-
lution of Kalyana. The Anubhava mantap
and the Sharana literature flourished and
became a historic movement. We, the SSK
Samaj people should feel proud about all
this. The Karnataka University has begun
Sree. Sahasrarjuna Research Centre and we
will know more about it in the next edition.

Let us redeem our pledge to
protect our mother Earth from our
reckless abuses. We, the modern
men must re-establish an unbro-
ken link with nature and with life.
We must again learn to involve
the energy of growing things and
to recognize as did the ancients
in India centuries ago that one
can take from the earth and the
atmosphere only so much as one
puts back into them.
The sages of the Atharva Veda
chanted in their hymn to Earth:
“What of Thee, I dig out, let that
quickly grow over, let me not hit
thy vitals or thy heart”.
So can men themselves be
vital and of good heart and con-
scious of their responsibilities.

What is Gestational Diabetes
- pregnant women who have
never had diabetes before but
who have high blood glucose
(sugar) levels during pregnancy
are said to have gestational
diabetes.
The reason behind gestational
diabetes is unknown. But there
is a largely accepted theory.
The placenta supports the baby
as it grows. Hormones from the
placenta help the baby develop.
But these hormones also block
the action of the mother’s insulin
in her body. This problem is
called insulin resistance. Insulin
resistance makes it hard for the
mother’s body to use insulin.
She may need up to three times
as much insulin.
Gestational diabetes starts
when your body is not able to
make and use all the insulin it
needs for pregnancy. Without
enough insulin, glucose cannot
leave the blood and be changed
to energy. Glucose builds up in
the blood to high levels. This is
called hyperglycemia.
Risk:
Any woman can develop
gestational diabetes, but some
women are at greater risk. Risk
factors for gestational diabetes
include:
• Women older than age 25
are more likely to develop
gestational diabetes.
• The risk increases if you have
prediabetes i.e if you have
slightly elevated blood sugar or
if a close family member, such
as a parent or sibling, has type
2 diabetes.
• You’re also more likely to
develop gestational diabetes
if you had it during a previous
pregnancy, if you delivered a
baby who weighed more than
9 pounds (4.1 kilograms),
or if you had an unexplained
stillbirth.
• The risk increases if the mother
is significantly overweight with
a body mass index (BMI) of 30
or higher.
Complications
Most women who have
gestational diabetes deliver
healthy babies. However,
gestational diabetes that’s not
carefully managed can lead to
uncontrolled blood sugar levels
and cause problems for you
and your baby, including an
increased likelihood of needing
a C-section to deliver.
 Complication affecting your
child:
• Excessive birth weight. Very
large babies — those that weigh
9 pounds or more — are more
likely to become wedged in the
birth canal, sustain birth injuries
or require a C-section birth.
• Early (preterm) birth and
respiratory distress syndrome.
Gestational diabetes causes risk
of early labor and delivering her
baby before its due date. Or her
doctor may recommend early
delivery because the baby is
large.
Babies born early may
experience respiratory distress
syndrome — a condition that
makes breathing difficult.
Babies with this syndrome
may need help breathing until
their lungs mature and become
stronger.
Lowbloodsugar(hypoglycemia).
Episodes of hypoglycemia (low
blood sugar) may provoke
seizures in the baby.
• Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Babies of mothers who have
gestational diabetes have a
higher risk of developing obesity
and type 2 diabetes later in life.
 Complications that may
affect you:
Gestational diabetes may also
increase the mother’s risk of:
• Gestational diabetes raises
your risk of high blood pressure,
as well as, preeclampsia —
a serious complication of
pregnancy that causes high
blood pressure and other
symptoms that can threaten the
lives of both mother and baby.
• You’re more likely to get it
again during a future pregnancy.
You’re also more likely to
develop type 2 diabetes as you
get older.
Some Do’s and Don’ts
Gestational diabetes is treatable.
It is possible to have a healthy
pregnancy with gestational
diabetes, but you must take
care of yourself to reduce your
risk for preeclampsia (pregnan-
cy-related high blood pressure),
cesarean delivery, an overly
large baby, other poor health
outcomes for your baby, and
long-term health effects for you.
To help you through this time,
follow this list of gestational
diabetes do’s and don’ts.
 DO Check Blood Sugars
Regularly
Closely monitor fasting and
postprandial (post-meal) blood
sugar levels. Your fasting blood
sugar goal should be less than
95 milligrams per deciliter (mg/
dL), your two-hour postprandial
blood sugar goal should be
less than 120 mg/dL, and your
one-hour postprandial blood
sugar goal should be less than
130 mg/dL.
 DO Meet With a Registered
Dietitian
Meet a registered dietitian and
Diabetologist/ Endocrinologist
to help you get started. They
will teach you when and how
to check your blood sugar, how
to adjust your diet and exercise
habits to keep blood sugar
under control, and how to take
any medications you might have
been prescribed to help control
your gestational diabetes.
 DO Take Medication as
Prescribed
Some women with gestational
diabetes will need to take
medication to help control blood
sugar. Insulin is one option.
Research published in Diabetes
C a r e
s u p p o r t s
that even
n e w e r ,
long-acting
insulins are
thought to
be safe during
pregnancy.
 DO Eat Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are an important
part of your diabetes diet. They
are fuel for your body and for
your growing baby. Pregnancy
hormones can make it hard to
control morning blood sugars
so you might be spreading
carbohydrates more through
lunch and dinner. Eating a
wide variety of foods, including
whole grains, fruits (with skin
on), vegetables, and dairy
products, will give you the
carbs you need. High-fiber or
low-glycemic foods will help
keep blood sugars more even
and help you feel full longer, as
well.
 DON’T Drink Sweet Drinks
Sweet drinks are one of the
fastest ways to raise your blood
sugars, which is why they must
be off your menu. Water is the
best choice s, but low-fat milk is
also a good option.
 DO Exercise
Appropriate regular physical
activity is often recommended
during pregnancy. Respect your
pregnant status and choose
exercises that won’t put you at
risk. For example, swimming,
water aerobics, and walking are
all great choices.
 DO Get Some Sleep
Research shows a strong
correlation between not getting
enough sleep and the risk of
gestational diabetes. Snoring
also is related to poor blood
sugar control and gestational
diabetes. You should let your
doctor know if you’re finding it
impossible to sleep well.
 DO Research Breastfeeding
Research indicates that women
could have better control over
their weight and diabetes
risk -- as well as possibly
improve their child’s long-term
health outcomes -- if they can
breastfeed.
 DO Schedule Follow-up Visits
Unfortunately, one bout of
gestational diabetes increases
your lifetime risk of developing
diabetes later in life by a factor
of seven. You also are at risk of
developing gestational diabetes
again in another pregnancy. It
is recommended that all women
with gestational diabetes be
screened for diabetes at 6 to 12
weeks postpartum. After that,
if the test is negative, seek
diabetes screening every three
years.

AARIDRA (ARDRA) NAKSHATRA It is time now to seriously ponder over the socio-cul- tural and economic problems that our samaj faces today. The changing socio-cultural scenario demands that the problems have to be redressed collectively. India is a vast land and the social problems faced by our larger community vary from region to region. So, we call upon our intellectuals to make an in-depth analysis of the vital problems bogging us relating especially to marriage and employment. Kids in the metropoli- tan cities and big towns now consider the web as their secret resource for every thing they want to know about sex and sexuality including dirty pictures and movies. Web is a world where sex is treated as just another commodity where access is round-the- clock with no censorship. Unless the parents are careful, it can colour a child’s attitude towards sex and relation- ships. It dehumanizes. Parents alone can best understand the sensitivity of their child and explain things about sexuality accordingly. Such explana- tions can help children maintain proper perspective and not get carried away by the informa- tions of the web. An Indian wedding has become a complex affair, challenging and overwhelming. Parents just don’t have the time to plan dream weddings for their kids. Wedding planning has become all the more important and a serious need. It involves an immense responsibility and vision. The parents of the mar- riageable sons and daughters should exercise due care and precautions and watch their activities. This will prevent the youths going astray. Mothers should act as good guides and friends to their daughters while the fathers should take into confidence their male children in matters relating to marriage affairs. The Intercaste marriages have been throwing emotional challenges and any attempts on our part to snub them through unlawful methods won’t auger well. So, timely act and due care and precaution alone is a good remedy. In some parts of the country, the SSK Samaj girls are better educated than the boys and this too is a major contributory factor for the growing number of intercaste marriages. Whether good or bad, the intercaste marriages will segregate the individuals from the community relationships and that leads on to unhappiness. We appeal to our leaders and intellectuals to send their opinions and suggestions to remedy such vital problems bogging our community. A sort of loud-thinking is necessary to guide our people. This month we have begun a column for career and vocational counseling. We have been insisting upon our leaders and teachers and social activists to evince special interest and initiation in guiding our youths in their career-seeking efforts. The career-counseling programmes should be undertaken and executed in all the cities and towns. Along with the religious performances and programmes, the social activities aiming at awareness-drive should be given due priority. We look forward to readers’ responses and the worthy articles will be published in this paper. The Kalchuris according to some historians were the migrants from Madhyapradesh and some historians say that these people had first migrated to Madhyapradesh and after a gap of time returned to Karnataka. The Kalachuri Inscriptions say that the Kalchuri rulers belonged to the Chedi lineage and were the descendants of the Chedi kings. Shishupal of the Mahabharatha king is said to be a Chedi ruler. The Kalachuris were the rulers (samant rulers) who owed allegiance to the Kalyani Chalukyas. Their original capital was Mangalavede near sholapur. It is said that Uchita, the ancestor had come to Mangalavede and made it his capital and ruled his kingdom from there. The Kalchuri kings are also called as Haihaya Kings. The Kalchuri Haihaya kings belong to the family of Sree Somavamsha Sahasrarjuna Kshatrya. Sree Sahasrarjuna Maharaja was also called Haihaya emperor. Thus, the Kalchuri chalukyas were the descendents of the family of Sree Sahasrarjuna. After the rule of King Uchita, Jogaman, Permadi, Bijjal the First ruled the kingdom and Mangalavede was their capital. We can now see many families of the SSK in Sholapur and Kolhapur and its surroundings. Mangalavede is in between Sholapur and Kolhapur. Some families of SSK in Sholapur are called Kolhapure as they migrated to Sholapur from Kolhapur and its surround- ings. The famous temples of Mahalaxmi (Sree Karaveer Nivasini), Yamaiee, Eka Veeradevi, in Kolhapur were built by the Kalyani Chalukyas. The second Bijjal of twelfth century belonging to the lineology of Haihaya was a blood- relation of the Chalukya rulers. When the Chalukya king had become weak, Bijjal declared himself as a free king and began his rule making Kalyani as his Capital. Bijjal adored the Shaiva Dharma and worshipped Sree Revana Siddeshwara as his aaradya Daiva. We find hundreds of SSK families in these areas. The SSK families known by the surnames Siddling, Rajoli, Raibagi and Arasiddi worship Sree Revana Siddeshwara as their kula-devata. The SSK migrants from Raibag are called Raibagis. They worship Revana Siddeshwara and during Shravanamasa they perform puja in the Revana Siddeshwara temple that is situated near Raibag. King Bijjala loved and adored the Shaiva Dharma and took measures to popularize it. Therefore, he invited Basavanna and made him the chief minister of his kingdom. This eventually led to the great religious revolu- tion of the twelfth century known as revo- lution of Kalyana. The Anubhava mantap and the Sharana literature flourished and became a historic movement. We, the SSK Samaj people should feel proud about all this. The Karnataka University has begun Sree. Sahasrarjuna Research Centre and we will know more about it in the next edition. (To be continued…..) Are you a writer? Please send articles on Women, Fashion, Food, Health and other articles. Kudos to Kumari Shreya T. Rangrej ! Vande Mataram Let us redeem our pledge to protect our mother Earth from our reckless abuses. We, the modern men must re-establish an unbro- ken link with nature and with life. We must again learn to involve the energy of growing things and to recognize as did the ancients in India centuries ago that one can take from the earth and the atmosphere only so much as one puts back into them. The sages of the Atharva Veda chanted in their hymn to Earth: “What of Thee, I dig out, let that quickly grow over, let me not hit thy vitals or thy heart”. So can men themselves be vital and of good heart and con- scious of their responsibilities.

The reason behind gestational diabetes is unknown. But there is a largely accepted theory. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother’s insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother’s body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin. Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia. Risk: Any woman can develop gestational diabetes, but some women are at greater risk. Risk factors for gestational diabetes include: • Women older than age 25 are more likely to develop gestational diabetes. • The risk increases if you have prediabetes i.e if you have slightly elevated blood sugar or if a close family member, such as a parent or sibling, has type 2 diabetes. • You’re also more likely to develop gestational diabetes if you had it during a previous pregnancy, if you delivered a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds (4.1 kilograms), or if you had an unexplained stillbirth. • The risk increases if the mother is significantly overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Complications Most women who have gestational diabetes deliver healthy babies. However, gestational diabetes that’s not carefully managed can lead to uncontrolled blood sugar levels and cause problems for you and your baby, including an increased likelihood of needing a C-section to deliver.  Complication affecting your child: • Excessive birth weight. Very large babies — those that weigh 9 pounds or more — are more likely to become wedged in the birth canal, sustain birth injuries or require a C-section birth. • Early (preterm) birth and respiratory distress syndrome. Gestational diabetes causes risk of early labor and delivering her baby before its due date. Or her doctor may recommend early delivery because the baby is large. Babies born early may experience respiratory distress syndrome — a condition that makes breathing difficult. Babies with this syndrome may need help breathing until their lungs mature and become stronger. Lowbloodsugar(hypoglycemia). Episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) may provoke seizures in the baby. • Type 2 diabetes later in life. Babies of mothers who have gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life.  Complications that may affect you: Gestational diabetes may also increase the mother’s risk of: • Gestational diabetes raises your risk of high blood pressure, as well as, preeclampsia — a serious complication of pregnancy that causes high blood pressure and other symptoms that can threaten the lives of both mother and baby. • You’re more likely to get it again during a future pregnancy. You’re also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes as you get older. Some Do’s and Don’ts Gestational diabetes is treatable. It is possible to have a healthy pregnancy with gestational diabetes, but you must take care of yourself to reduce your risk for preeclampsia (pregnan- cy-related high blood pressure), cesarean delivery, an overly large baby, other poor health outcomes for your baby, and long-term health effects for you. To help you through this time, follow this list of gestational diabetes do’s and don’ts.  DO Check Blood Sugars Regularly Closely monitor fasting and postprandial (post-meal) blood sugar levels. Your fasting blood sugar goal should be less than 95 milligrams per deciliter (mg/ dL), your two-hour postprandial blood sugar goal should be less than 120 mg/dL, and your one-hour postprandial blood sugar goal should be less than 130 mg/dL.  DO Meet With a Registered Dietitian Meet a registered dietitian and Diabetologist/ Endocrinologist to help you get started. They will teach you when and how to check your blood sugar, how to adjust your diet and exercise habits to keep blood sugar under control, and how to take any medications you might have been prescribed to help control your gestational diabetes.  DO Take Medication as Prescribed Some women with gestational diabetes will need to take medication to help control blood sugar. Insulin is one option. Research published in Diabetes C a r e s u p p o r t s that even n e w e r , long-acting insulins are thought to be safe during pregnancy.  DO Eat Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are an important part of your diabetes diet. They are fuel for your body and for your growing baby. Pregnancy hormones can make it hard to control morning blood sugars so you might be spreading carbohydrates more through lunch and dinner. Eating a wide variety of foods, including whole grains, fruits (with skin on), vegetables, and dairy products, will give you the carbs you need. High-fiber or low-glycemic foods will help keep blood sugars more even and help you feel full longer, as well.  DON’T Drink Sweet Drinks Sweet drinks are one of the fastest ways to raise your blood sugars, which is why they must be off your menu. Water is the best choice s, but low-fat milk is also a good option.  DO Exercise Appropriate regular physical activity is often recommended during pregnancy. Respect your pregnant status and choose exercises that won’t put you at risk. For example, swimming, water aerobics, and walking are all great choices.  DO Get Some Sleep Research shows a strong correlation between not getting enough sleep and the risk of gestational diabetes. Snoring also is related to poor blood sugar control and gestational diabetes. You should let your doctor know if you’re finding it impossible to sleep well.  DO Research Breastfeeding Research indicates that women could have better control over their weight and diabetes risk -- as well as possibly improve their child’s long-term health outcomes -- if they can breastfeed.  DO Schedule Follow-up Visits Unfortunately, one bout of gestational diabetes increases your lifetime risk of developing diabetes later in life by a factor of seven. You also are at risk of developing gestational diabetes again in another pregnancy. It is recommended that all women with gestational diabetes be screened for diabetes at 6 to 12 weeks postpartum. After that, if the test is negative, seek diabetes screening every three years. -Swati Subhash Metrani.
